BOWLING COMPETITION

FIRST ONE-DAY TOURNAMENT

WALKER DEFEATS WILLIAMS.

EIGHTEEN TEAMS IN CONTEST.

The first one-day bowling tournament of the season was held on the greens of the Paritutu Bowling Club yesterday. The weather was ideal at the commencement of play. A shower later in the day made the turf rather heavy in the afternoon. Eighteen teams, including visitors from other districts, entered the competition which, thanks to the smooth-running arrangements, was completed by the end of the afternoon.

The contest was conducted in three divisions. Section play, consisting of matches of nine heads each, was won by teams skipped by Walker (New Plymouth), F. Okey (Vogeltown) and Williams (Fitzroy). Williams drew the bye for the semi-final, of ten heads, which was won by Walker by one point. Walker then went on to defeat Williams by two points in a ten heads final. Trophies were presented to the winners of the tournament and the runners-up. Tn the semi-final Okey secured the first head with one point and Walker the second. Then Walker added a two and a one, which were responded to by the other side with two singles, leaving Walker ; four points to three. He won the seventh and eighth head with twos, making him eight, hut Okey could only add a one and a three on the -last two heads, so that he was still one behind at the final count.

The final match was launched promisingly ,by Walker with two threes and a one. Williams took the next four, heads for a two, a one, a three and a one, making the scores on the seventh head seven all. Then Walker added one and Williams one, but the former took the last head for a two and th© matcjl. Before the tournament .commenced Mr.. G.
