FIELDS BELOW AVERAGE SILVER SCORN AND IRISH LANCER PEGGED EXCHANGE’S EASY WIN. (By ’Wire—Special to News.) Christchurch, Last Night. Following rain during the night and this morning the sun shone brightly for the third day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting. The attendance was smaller than on the previous day and the totalisator figures again showed a drop. The fields were ! below average size and the racing was not particularly exciting. Silver Scorn won the Oaks as she liked, while the imported horse Irish Lancer created a good impression when he won the Jockey Club Handicap. It was hard to know why Okapua was favourite in the Fort Cooper Hurdles as the first day’s, -form did not seem to favour him against Morena. Morena led over the first hurdle and stayed in the lead all the way. -Morena gave a very smooth exhibition of fast jumping and never was troubled. Hounslow and. IS-ports King alternated in second place, hut the latter failed to stay, Hounslow beating Okapua easily (for second place by half a length. Hounslow is improving in jumping.

Southdown was hot favourite in the Spring Nursery but though finishing strongly after going out slowly never looked like catching Pegged Exchange. This Trentham colt began smartly and running very straight won easily. He is by .Paper Money from the brilliant Epitaph. Sweet Agnes after chasing the leader most of the way - hung on to be third; followed by Top Rank, which may do better later in the season. Grouse, a son of the speedy Moorfowl, showed up early and then faded out. He is a good-looking colt .but touched in the wind. ■ . TOUT LE MOND IMPROVING. •The Otaio Plate was a good race to the straight but in the run home only two had a chance. Some Toff led out from Tout le Mond; Muff and: Pahu while Red Sun joined in 'alt the mile post and Night Flyer-two furlongs further on. Tout'le Mond joined Some Toff at the entrance to the straight, where Red Sun and Night Flyer were handy. Some Toff then retired and though Red Sun was almost on terms with Tout le Mond at the distance the three-year-old stalled him off decisively by a neck. Night (Flyer, three lengths away, ran a decent race. Full Mark, Some Toff, Muff and Pahu .headed the others but were several lengths away. Tout Je Mlond ran a fair -race in the Derby and is growing into a colt who may do well before the end of the season. Red Sun ran another good race s and; Night Flyer stayed .on, but the others were well beaten.

The scratching of Klorokio, .Jaloux and Azalea left a disappointing field of six in the Jockey Club Handicap, but five were well backed. Irish. Lancer jumped off with a dead and was not caught. Cricket Bat and Arrow Lad followed him for half a mile, when Arrow Lad.' retired. Autopay then moved, up, he and Cricket Bat being just behind, the leader at the entrance to the straight-. Irish Lancer drew away again and won clomfortably by a length, and a-half. Ranelagh finished strongly half a length away. Then came Autopay and Arrow Lad with Rational 11. last all the way. The- winner, an imported horse owned by the oM New Zealand, cricketer A. H. Fisher, Dunedin, 'has done all his previous racing in hack company and had only one win prior to this success. He ran second to Silver Scorn in the Spring Plate last Saturday and 'looks like developing into a very good horse. Cricket Bat ran hie best race of the season and is nearly at his best again. ‘ Arrow Lad disappointed as he was in trouble after half a mile. Autopay was beaten ' a furlong from home.- /'

SHIVER SCORN‘IN GREAT SHAPE.

Lady Zephyr was scratched, for the Oa'ks, leaving six runners. Silver’Scorn, as expected, was Backed like a certainty and her supporters were never uneasy. Importance led Purse and the favourite for .six furlongs. Purse joined Importance, who thrin retired. 'Silver Scorn now ran up to Purse at the half-mile post, with La Moderne and Fleeting Glance next. Purse was beaten when the straight was reached, Silver Scorn going on to beat La Moderne easily by two lengths, while Fleeting Grance, five lengths away, beat ’Pacify by a head. The winner was always going easily but turned on the speed in the last half mile, which she ran in under 495. She looked cooler to-day than ,in the other races and has come through her three races in great shape.

Metal Bird and Argentic were equal favourites in the Ashley Handicap. Grand Review was smartest out, Niggerhead and Craigavon following for two furlongs. Metal Bird then took secorid place, with Craigavon and Argentic handy. Metal Bird lost his place at the home turn. Argentic challenged when the .straight was reached, and won by a head. Craigavon struck on well a length away, with Metal Bird two lengths farther back. This was Argentic’s second win at the meeting, prior to which he started only twice. ’He stays well and will-.win a longer jburney later in the season. The concluding event, the Avon Handicap, saw Hurlingham a strong favourite and,the support accorded him was amply justified. .Subdivision headed Red Royal and Hurlingham after two furiongs but was not allowed to get far riway. The leader stopped, when tie Straight was reached, leaving Hurlingiham showing the way to Sharp Thorn and Tippling. Hurlingham won easily. Sharp Thorn was second half a length trom Some Toff, who finished fast after being last to the straight. Tippling was lelose up. Hurlingham, a brother to (Ranelagh, has raced well in hack company this .season and will make a better horse than Ranelagh. Sharp Thom (only recently resumed work and will improve. The well backed Blue Metal was never sighted.
