STRATFORD MOUNTAIN ROAD.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —In this morning’s Daily News there is a paragraph under the above heading claiming that the Plateau Road is the highest in New Zealand, extending as it does to an altitude of 4000 feet above sea level. I make no comment on the above claim, but it.is further stated that “Mr. Robins ignored guide books and such sources of information’.’ and. gave a set of figures showing the heights of other roads. In supplying these “authoritative figures” I would like to point out that not only have guide books been ignored, blit also the facts that a road has been open for two years for a distance of two miles above the Chateau (37'10 feet), and for nearly three years a motor road has been open for a distance of about 13 miles above the Hermitage, Mount Cook. ■ —l am, etc., EUCLID. Hawera, Nov. 8, 1932.
