HOSPITAL MATRONS
HIGHER QUALIFICATIONS. STIPULATION next year. Wellington, Nov., 7. From July next hospital boards controlling institutions which are recognised as training schools for general nurses will not be permited to appoint as matrons in charge other than a nurse who is doubly qualified, according to an announcement made by the Minister of Health, the Hon. J. A. Young, to-day. That will mean that in addition to being fully qualified as a general nurse a matron must also possess qualifications in maternity nursing. The Nurses and Midwives’ Registration Board has been. pressing for tins stipulation for some time,, said the Minister. In view of the facilities now afforded for nurses to take, a post-gradu-ate course in the higher grades of nursing science it was only fair that those who possessed superior qualifications should be chosen for advancement in the profession.
