Time, Im. 395. FIFTH SUCCESSIVE WIN BRILLIANCE OF SILVER SCORN. DESCRIPTION OF THE RACING. (By Wire—Special to News.)

Christchurch, Last Night. •„ The Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting was. continued in perfect weather and with a moderate attendance. The Derby saw Silver Scorn win her fifth race in succession.. She is a brilliant galloper and outclassed the opposition, being under a pull over the last furlong. She is bred, owned and trained by G. Murray Aynsley, who has trained many god horses, including Warstep, but this is the first time he has been associated with a Derby winner. Backers started badly in the Middleton race for jumping jockeys. They went for Elude, Some Toff and Free Mark, but though those three ran fairly well they never looked like' winning. Morepork after - being slow out took pharge at the end of three furlongs. Juniper challenged' in the straight but Morepork shook him off, winning decisively. Riri came with a late run and was close up third. His performance was good after knocking himself about through fractiousness at the barrier. He would win a big Take if he settled down. Morepork had two races in the autumn but this - was ’ his first start since . he resumed work after a spell. He is a four-year-old by The Ace' from the Oaks winner Brown Owl, and if he trains, on he may be very good. GUARANTEE BRILLIANT. Form pointed to Guarantee and Fracas In the Irwell Handicap and they had the race to themselves most of the way, Guarantee winning by a length. He is a brilliant customer and his success was popular, as Mr. ,J. M. Samson is a liberal patron of racing. Fracas ran another good race. Counterplay, a etable-mate of Fracas, finished strongly In third place and will win races if he;

goes on right, his main trouble at present being a disposition to fractiousness, which is noticeable in others of Counterscarp’s progeny. Merry Peel, favourite in the Criterion Handicap, registered an attractive performance and won going away. Wise Choice was soon in charge and after three furlongs was two lengths clear of Great Star, Merry Peel and Cricket Bat with Mount Boa and La Poupee last. La Poupee, Mount Boa and Ranelagh moved up at the entrance of the straight and the field bunched at the distance. Merry Peel drew away in the last 100 yards to win decisively by over a length, while Wise Choice stalled off La Poupee by a neck. Ranelagh was a head away and then came Cricket Bat and Great Star. The wiuner has made a great improvement in the past few months, and will stay a good mile. La Poupee ran a great race after being in the tail of the field to the straight. Cricket Bat failed in the final pinch.

OUTSTANDING THREE-YEAR-OLD.

Silver Scorn was backed as a certainty in the Derby and the result justified the backers’ confidence. Minstrel Lad led out of the straight but La Modeme then took charge, drawing out three lengths from Minstrel Lad and Tout le Monde with Silver Scorn last. Drumfire moved up at the mile post and Silver Scorn followed suit a little farther on, Silver Ring having gone back to last. Drumfire was second at the five-furlong post with Minstrel Lad, Silver Scorn and Tout le Monde next. La Moderne led Drumfire, Silver Scorn and Tout le Monde round the turn. Drumfire then retired and Silver Ring started to move up. Once in the straight Silver .Scorn shot to the front with the race well in hand. Rocket came with a late run but though he headed all the others Silver. Scorn beat him easily. La Moderne was two lengths away, with Tout le Monde and Silver Ring next. Silver Scorn left no doubt that she is the outstanding three-year-old. Rocket will make a good stayer and will improve with racing. Drumfire has won good races up to a mile. Silver Pang failed to run on after a prominent entrance to the straight. CONCENTRATE IMPROVED.

Korokio was favourite in the Fendalton and tried to win from end to end. She was four lengths in front at the end of two furlongs, where Red Heckle, Rarno, Chopin -and Concentrate were bunched. The favourite increased her advantage to ten lengths at half a mile from home, after which she commenced to tire. Ramo was done when the straight was reached. Concentrate then beat°Korokio by two lengths, with Red Heckle two lengths away and Chopin close up. Arikira would not jump out well and tailed the field all the way. Concentrate was improved by the Cup run and will continue to race well.Korokio has great speed but cannot be controlled in the early stages. The Randolph Handicap for apprentice riders drew a field of 15. Aga Khan, hot favourite, again settled his chance by getting into trouble on the journey. Royal Sceptre was soon in front, followed by Purse, Grand Review and Gold Dress, while Shamfight joined them after two furlongs. Royal Sceptre was four lengths clear at the home turn but Shamfight cut him down soon after reaching the straight and Avon easily, while fioyal Sceptre stuck on to beat Purse, which seemed a possible second a furlong from the post. Shamfight has ran several useful races but this was easily his best. His dam is closely related to Windbag, now a successful Australian sire. Aga Khan after being a trifle slow away was well placed five furlongs from home, when he ran into serious trouble and. under the circumstances did remarkably well to finish fourth. ' . , The Epsom Handicap was a good betting race though Rational 11. yas the pronounced favourite. . Subdivision soon streaked to the front and had a lead of ei*ht lengths after three furlongs, Flower and Tippling heading the • others. The leader collapsed when the'straight was reached. Some Toff and Tippling drew away, the former staying, well to win by half a length. Monastic finished fast, from the back for third place, with Flower, Rational 11, and Water Power next. Locksley whipped round at the start and was left. The winner failed .earlier iff the day in the Highweight Middleton and obviously is not suited by heavyweights. Rational 11. failed to run on after, a prominent entrance to the straight. Meprisant, though well backed, was never dangerous.
