■ PING-PONG TOURNAMENT. Owing to the busy times there was not such a large number present at the pin°--pong tournament on Friday in°-? In the ladies’ semi-finals Miss Colsen (8) beat Mrs. Foreman (scr) 21— 19. Mrs. Bloor, had the bye. ■ln the finals Mrs. Bloor (2) beat Miss G. Colsen (8) 21—15; In the men’s semi-finals S. Geary (6) beat M. Murray (sct) 21—13 and S. Savage (owe 3) beat vv. Geary (owe 1) 21-12. In the finals S. Geary (6) beat S. Savage (owe 3) 21— 19 The fortnightly meeting of the Ladies’ Guild was held at Mrs. Murray’s residence on Friday afternoon. At a meeting of the Girls Club it was decided to hold the meetings over until February owing to some of the girls being unable to attend during the busy'season.
AWATUNA FUNCTION.
HELP FOR CALF COMPETITION.
Mrs. H. C. Duckett and Mrs. Gray, Makaka, were hostesses at a pleasant afternoon in the Awatuna hall last Tuesday." Their floral decorations on the tea'tables of ranunculi, anemones and greenery were much admired. The funds drived from . the afternoon were devoted to the calf medal competition. Miss Mattv Duckett played a pianoforte solo. A number of interesting competitions were, held, the winners being Mrs. Hutchings, Mrs. Webby, Mrs. R. Hartley and Miss M. Hughes, each receiving a ■jam dish or salad bowl. Mrs. Bourke (president) thanked Mrs. Duckett and Mrs. Gray for their help- for a worthy object. Mrs. Duckett suitably replied and thanked the ladies for the assistance they had ■ given Mrs. Gray and herself. 1 GENERAL ITEMS. Cherries are not common at any time in Hawera and to have them ripe at this time of the year is more unusual. Yesterday, however, Mrs. Hamilton, South Road, brought a well-ripened sample from her orchard to the Daily News office. Eighty-five B class Hawera registered unemployed and 35 0 .class men will be given relief work this week. U class men will have four days’ work (jE2) and B class two and a-half days (£1 os) and three days (fl 10s) depending’ 'On th.© siz© of th*eir family. A rather outstanding performance was that of the dairy herd, of Mr. H. 'Ward, Tokaora, in the third testing period. With a herd of 37 cows the record is 13211 b of milk with a 4 per cent, test, which gives the remarkable average of 5'3.431'b fat for 30 days. This was preceded ■ in the second period -by an average of butterfat of 45.651 b.
