DEVELOPMENT OF INDUSTRY

FUNCTIONS OF NEW COMMITTEE.

“BE AS HELPFUL AS POSSIBLE.”

A brief description of the Development of Industries Committee recently established by the Government was given by the Hon. R. Masters, Minister of Industries and Commerce, at the Stratford banquet last night. The committee’s aims and objects were the development of industries on sound technical and economic lines, the association of science with all industrial processes, the guidance of established industries along improved lines, the introduction of appropriate new industries and sponsoring them while they were in an infant state, the examination of relations between the Government and industry in order to provide for sound industrial development on national lines, and the creation of a sound industrial viewpoint compatible with national and Imperial development.

“The committee is composed of men with special qualifications,” Mr. Masters said, “and it has dealt with many matters of a general nature affecting all industries. Recommendations have been conveyed to the Government so that necessary steps to modify legislation which acts in restrictive manner on industrial progress may be enacted, or that new legislation to facilitate progress of industry in desirable directions may be passed. Investigations have been made of new industries which could be commenced with advantage to the Dominion, and guidance has been offered to promoters to ensure that they will have all conditions, both scientific and technical, properly arranged so that the proposed new industries will have a reasonable chance of success.

“A new system of helping present industries and establishing new ones in which effect is being given to recent developments of applied'science, has been adopted by means of granting licenses, or by granting protection against internal competition for a period. Summed up, the function of the committee and the desire of the Government are to be as helpful as possible to industry generally.”
