MILESTONE'S IN CHURCH HISTORY.

The offertories at St. Mary’s Church, Hawera, on January 5, 1919, which was celebrated as a day of thanksgiving for victory and peace, totalled £1241. A further £3OO was promised.. The first recorded baptism in St. Mary’s, Hawera, was administered by the Rev. R. J. Thorpe, M.A. The entry in the register is dated January 9, 1882, the child being Francis Henry Moore, son of Walter Moore and Henrietta Amy Moore, of Mokoia. The first confirmation service was conducted in March, 1883, by Bishop Hadfield. Among those confirmed were: Misses Emma Hobbs (Mrs. Walter Wilson), Alice Hobbs (Mrs. Caverhill), Annin Hobbs (Mrs. Gilbert Wilson), M. Partridge (’Mrs. Jack Hobbs), Bessie Young (Mrs. Louis Rogers), the late Miss Maria Baddley, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Cobham and Mr. Charles Goodson. The candidates were prepared by the Rev. W. Hevingham Root. In January, 1903, the Rev. J. A. Jacob inaugurated the Parochial Notes. During the war period, among other activities, the people of the parish subscribed funds for the building of a hut at the front. This building was known as the Hawera Hut, and fulfilled a useful purpose in providing a cheerful spot where books and writing materials could be obtained.

Men of the parish who fell in the Boer War and in the Great War have their memorials in the parish churches. The guidon of Queen Alexandra s Mounted Rifles hangs in the nave of St. Mary’s. Among the original church families were those of Messrs. A. S. Hobbs, Partridge,, Adamson, Caverhill, Nicholas, Isaac Bailey, J. R. Lysaght, H. W. Moore, Kelly, Lucena, J. L. Perry, Duffil, W. G. White, 0. Laishley, Nolan, M. J. Goodson, Morecroft, James Robson, Walter Cobham, Young, Kempthorne, Swinbourne, Pinches, Larcom, F. Riddiford, A. and T. Middlemas, J. and T. Mason, George McLean and the two Baddley brothers.
