OFFICERS OF THE PARISH
SERVICE IN 1885 AND TO-DAY.
INSTITUTIONS OF THE CHURCH. Space does not permit of a complete record of officers of the parish. Below are given the first complete list of officers and the list of those who are carrying on the work to-day. The first service book of St. Mary’s was commenced in Lent, 1885. The flyleaf records the following church officers: Curate-in-charge, W. Hevingham Root; lay-readers, H. W. Moore, H. Caplen; churchwardens, W. A. Parkinson (people’s) ; H. Caplen (minister’s); vestrymen, Messrs. Morecroft, J. Mason, Gower, Duffil, W. Caverhill; Yorke and Parsons (Manaia); Brett and Gane (Normanby); Watkins (Okaiawa); superintendent of Sunday school, E. Gower.
The present officers are: Vicar, Rev. H. Whitby James, L.Th.; Vicar’s warden, Mr. J. C. Smith; people’s warden, Mr. J. M. Townsend; parish vestry, Messrs. E. R. S. Dale, H. D. Caplen, R. T. Wyatt, B. H. Harley, A. E. Morris, C. E. Frampton, W. P. McAnerin, R. R. Henderson, F. E. Clarke (treasurer), T. H. M'arychurch (secretary); synodsmen, Messrs. C. D. Arlidge and C. N. Vickeridge; layreaders, Messrs. J. C. Smith, G. H. Buckeridge, F. Jones, E. L. Mulcock and L. Oppenheim; sacristan, Mr. A. E. Morris; Sunday school superintendents, kindergarten, Miss E. Laurent, upper school, Mr. L. Oppenheim; organist and choirmaster, Mr. Herbert Webb; choir secretary, Mr. G. H. Buckeridge; .missionary guild secretary, Miss Biggs; sanctuary guild secretary, Mrs. J. Hobbs; Chronicle secretary, Mrs. S. B. Howlett. The officers at St. James’, Mokoia,
are: Vicar’s warden, Mr. T. Bickford,people’s warden, Mr. W. Marsh. At St. Paul’s, Normanby, the officers are: Vicar’s warden, Mr. Howe-Giles; people’s warden, Mr. H. D. Macdonald. The choir, the Bible classes, the Sunday schools, the sewing guild and the flower show are all institutions of which St. Mary’s should be proud; Mr. E. Gower was first superintendent of the Sunday school. His death occurred in 1885, when with 80 names on the roll the school was preparing to move into a new building. The present parish hall and schoolroom, a memorial to those who fell in the Great War, was opened at the end of 1916. The first choirmaster was Mr. W. H. E. Wanklyn, who was followed by Messrs. C. Laishley, W. Wilson, A. Bartley, R. Page, the Rev. J. A. Jacob, H. Wadsworth, H. C. H. Hutton, G. A. Burgess and H. Webb. The organists have been Mrs. A. S. Hobbs, Mr. Wanklyn, Miss M. Lysaght, Miss Palmer (now Mrs. Fairhall), Miss M. E. Parkinson (now Mrs. R. Page), Messis. Schwartz, F. G. Treweek, Hutton, E. Atkin, Mrs. F. C. King, Mr. C. L. Rowe, Miss Madden and Mr. Webb. Reference to the music of the church would be incomplete without recalling some of those who have been members of the choir. Among these were Mr. and Mrs. Walter Wilson, Mrs. W. H. Swinburne, Mr. and Mrs. Jupp, Mr. Laishley, Mrs. E. Foden, Miss A. Kelly, Mrs. H. Southey, Messrs. Herbert Graves, L. O. Hooker. A. Bartley, R. H. W. Guise, M. G. Bell, J. 0. Smith, S. L. Fairhall, Miss P. Bond, Misses Brunette (two), Mrs. W. A. Parkinson, Mrs. J. A. Duffil, Miss Elsie Bernard, Messrs. G. A. Burgess, L. Chadwick, G. Buckeridge, F. W. Sutton, A. E. Moms, H. 'E. Batten, Miss Jones, Miss Caplen, Miss
Johnson, Misses Batten (two), Mawson Cameron ' (the first boy soprano). Staunch and continued membership has been a- feature of the Young Men’s Bible Class. The club was formed in 1923 as the result of a meeting called by Mr. G. H. B'uckeridge. It has had only three captains, Messrs. S. A. Lay, N. Roberts and G. E. Meyrick. The club was the first body to introduce badminton to Hawera.
