DRAPERY AND MEAT
PROBLEM IN SYDNEY. ANOTHER “SAUSAGES” JOKE. The Health Committee of the Sydney City Council has been asked by someone in a striped apron to consider whether departmental stores should be permitted to sell . butchers’ meat. The health officer, Dr. Purdy, said that the practice was hot- harmful to public health, but that stores selling both drapery and meat, he thought, were breaking th© Act. It does not appear to the general public, says a, correspondent, that there 5s any more reason to. restrain the stores from selling meat than from selling sweets or, cakes, or from having a cafeteria or dining room. Several stores sell fresh meat, poultry and fish, also th© stock of an ordinary ham and beef shop. It might as well be asserted that a department store should not sell butter, cheese, bacon, and so forth, because it sold drapery. i An aiderman, -who is & merchant tailor and who grows his own wool, thinks that the stores may compete unfairly with ' butchers. • His expression of this fear gave an opening for the joke of th© afternoon. “Butchers compete with other trades,” said someone. “What do butchers sell other than meat?” demanded a defender of the butchers. It was Dr. Purdy who replied on the instant, “Sausages.” This reflection upon the sausage which apjears so regularly on all menus of restaurants and boarding houses did not deter the committee from recommending that a protest he made to the Board of Health.
