NO MONEY TO SPARE

FIRE BOARD’S AFFAIRS. SUGGESTED CONFERENCE. When a communication was received by the Wellington Fire Board last week from the Dunedin Fire Board proposing a conference of five boards .to consider the Motor Vehicles Act and amendments to the Fire Brigades Act, the general .feeling of members was against the' proposal, mostly on the score of economy. Dunedin said that Christchurch and Invercargill had supported the proposal. Seeing that the proposed amendments to the Act were on the lines approved by a previous conference, and discussed with the inspector, Mr. R. Girling Butcher, Mr. S. 8. Dean said he failed to see what good purposes would be served by holding such a conference. The chairman, Mr. N. Nelson, said that he had it definitely from Mr. Butcher that the Internal Affairs Department was opposed to a conference at present, and as the expense of the delegates would have to be paid by the local bodies, he saw no reason for such a conference.

“What we might do, 1 ’ said Mr. Nel- : son, “is to confer with Mr. Butcher once more upon the point, and at the same time ftsk for the department’s veto or blessing on the conf*rence.” Thr f&urss was agreed upon.
