Scene of Gaiety at New Plymouth Winter Show

Under the happiest of auspices, from the point of view of both weather arid public support, the 23rd annual New Plymouth Winter Show was opened in the Agricultural Halls, Gill Street, yesterday afternoon by Mr. W. J. Polson, M.P., president of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. The success of any agricultural show rests primarily on the support accorded by its exhibitors. In this respect the 1932 New Plymouth Show is particularly fortunate, for so keen has been the demand for space that numerous applications have had to be declined; and this in spite of the fact that the motor exhibitors have given up part of their usual space to assist the show committee. He would be phlegmatic indeed who would not be stirred with amazement at the transformed appearance of the show buildings this year. In fact, without a personal inspection it would be impossible to conceive the picturesque gaiety into which the normally bare halls have been changed. This is largely the result of the work of the two gifted directors of the decoration committee. The lay-out of the show has been completely re-constructed, and visitors will find much to admire in the re-organisation. More than ever before the show represents the happy consummation of the co-operation of town and country; more than ever it is “all the fun of the fair” in its truest and most delightful form. The people of North Taranaki have never had a better opportunity of seeing the rural and urban wealth of their community displayed compactly side by side, and under conditions in which warmth, colour and gaiety are the dominant features. Confined within a few walls is a' vivid panorama of North Taranaki life. The show will be open from 9 a.m. to. 10 p.m. to-day, to-morrow and Friday. To-morrow is “town school” day, and Friday “country school” day. On both these days school children will be admitted for 3d.
