On Wednesday afternoon the arts and crafts circle of th© Women’s Club met and arranged a programme of work for the ensuing season. Quite an encouraging number of members was present, among whom were Mesdambes W. A, O’Callaghan, L. J. Bull, W. Janson, H. Whitehead, Tennant, Evans, Adams, Rice, Rowe, A. E. Stevens, Chisholm, H. R. Kemp, and L. A. Ablett, and Misses Hay-Mackenzie, Buchanan, W. C. Power and D. Corrigan.

Mrs. F. W. Sutton was hostess at a most enjoyable afternoon tea on Tuesday, receiving her guests attired in a charming gown of georgette and lace in a midnight blue shade. Among those entertained were Mrs. Stott, Mrs. W. Feudal!, Mrs. T. H. McWilliam, Mrs. Hugh McWilliams, Mrs. Woodward, Mrs. W. 0. Williams, Mrs. Reid (Wellington) and Mrs. G. W. Powdrell.

A number of members of the arts and crafts circle of the Women’s Club, at the invitation of Miss Lysaght, motored out to her horde on Tuesday afternoon and spent a very interesting hour or two viewing Mr. John Moore’s paintings. They also had an opportunity of inspecting a collection of various arts and crafts of earlier times, among which were tapestries and magnificent relief carving. A home-made hand loom (made by Mr. Moore) created much interest, and it demonstrated how wool, the raw product, could be washed, dyed, spun and woven in th© home. Afternoon tea was served in the drawing room, Mrs. Brian Lysaght and Miss KisSling assisting the hostess. Among those present were Mesdames Bull, H. R. Kemp. Rowe, W. McL’Dowie, H. Whitehead, G. Duncan, Chisholm, W. Janson, J. Houston, Evans, Adams, Tennent, L. A. Ablett, A. E. Stevens, J. Campbell, W. A. Duckworth and Misses Hay-Mackenzie, D. Corrigan, M. C. Power and B. Young.

Lovell was hostess at her home, South Road, at a most enjoyable dance given for her two daughters’ young friends on Wednesday evening, Mrs. Lovell receiving the young people attired in a smart gown of light navy lace and georgette. Miss Sheila Lovell wore a picture frock in green floral ray-chene, while Miss Pat’s frock was fashioned, in eau-de-nil taffetas.’Among those present were Misses Rea Allen (Wanganui), Joan Towney (Kapuni), Janet Train (Waitotara), Jessie Joyce (Okaiawa), Elwyn Low (Wanganui), Rhea Fay (Stratford), Lindsay Scown, Monica Joyce (Okaiawa), Lindbergh, Mavis McKenzie, Mary Hawken (Mokoia), Kitty Coleman, Cushla Tonks, Marjorie Hunt, Ruth Findlay (Patea), Betty Powdrell, Peggy Wylds, Winnie Weir (Eltham), Rosalind Honeyfield (Patea), Mickey Stewart (Eltham), J. An enjoyable party was given by Masters Carr Jones and George Gibson at the Carlton tea rooms, Hawera, last night in honour of Miss Margaret (Peggy) Brown, who is leaving for England in the near future. Miss Brown was presented with a complete volume of Shakespeare’s works, signed by all present. Vocal items were given by Misses Olga Hancock and Elsie Twaddle, and extras were played by Mrs. Low, Miss Gilmour, Masters Barney Thomas, Noel King and Laurie Spratt. The Hawera Club’s croquet team, which won the McL’Dowie Cup, and the donor, Mrs. W. McL’Dowie, w.ere recently the guests of the club at a very pleasant afternoon tea at the pavilion, Mrs. McL’Dowie being presented with a charming bouquet (the work of Mrs. C. H. Washer). The team comprised Mesdames W. G. Strange, F. W. Horner, J. Syme and Adamson, with Mrs. Sinclair as emergency.

The music, art and drama club, which has been holding evenings for some months past, closed its season recently with a very pleasant gathering in the Scouts’ Hall, Mrs. Hams presiding. One play was read, and another, “The Dear Departed,” was memorised and acted and very much enjoyed by all present. Other items included solos from the opera "Aida,” by Miss Constance Reilly, and ’cello solos by Miss Iris Lawson. Supper was served, following which a presentation w as made to Sirs. Fyfe, under whose leadership the club was instituted, as a token of the members’ appreciation of the many happy evenings spent and the interesting works read.

The first of a series of invitation social evenings arranged by Miss Vera Moginie and her pupils was held last night in the Methodist Bible Class room. Songs were rendered by Mesdames J. McCarty, J. Carter, .Misses V. Moginie, W. Huggins, M. Gibson, J. Combs (New Plymouth), A. Pauli (New Plymouth), 1. McGlashan, N. Davis, J. McGlashan, and T. Gibson and Mr. C. O. Pratt. A vocal duet was given by Misses P. and J. McGlashan, a piano duet by Mesdames P. O. Veale and G. Duncan, a piano solo by Miss E. Moon (Stratford), and recitations by Miss G.

On Thursday evening of last week a number of young people paid a surprise visit to the residence of Jar. and Mrs. A. Sutherland, well-known residents of Okaiawa, to celebrate the com-ing-of-age of their youngest daughter, Nellie. An enjoyable evening was spent with euchre competitions and musical items. Supper was served in the drawing room, a-fter which Mr. J. Mortimer, in proposing the health of the guest of honour, asked her to accept a handsome necklet from the gathering. Miss Sutherland suitably replied. She was also the recipient of a beautiful bouquet. Mr. Mortimer then proposed the health of the parents, Mr. Suther-
