INVENTORS REWARDED
GRANTS FROM GOVERNMENT. SUBSTANTIAL SUMS DISBURSED. The largest amount given by the Royal Commission on Awards to Inventors in the period covered by their sixth report was £lOO,OOO, awarded to Peter Brotherhood, Ltd., for improvQments in internalcombustion engines. The sum was described as a further recommendation, ■savs the Daily Telegraph. For rifle grenades, Mr. F. Marten Hale was given a further reward of £ll,OOO, and for aerial bombs a further award of £3OOO. Sir James Blacklock. Henderson, who invented many improvements in naval gunnery, was awarded £5OOO ,f or liquid level control in gyro compasses and £lOOO for floating ballistic and modified ballistic. Mr. S. G. Brown, another noted inventor, who shortly before the war discovered the methods, used by the Royal Flying Corps, by which airships and aeroplanes could receive wireless messages, also received £5OOO for liquid level control in gyro Compasses, and an award of £2OOO was made to Lieut.Commander J. S. Love and Mr. H. Clausen for gyro director training gear. Mr. A. E. Frank'ling and Mr. W. H. Harris were given £5OOO ior an improved method of leading electric cables into gun turrets. Webley and Scott, Ltd., received £l2OO for the Mark IV .38 calibre Service revolver, and M. Y. Le Prieur, M.C., was awarded £6OO for wind vane sights. Only six claims awaited hearing, and the Commission hoped to dispose of these by the end of the year. No time limit was .placed on- the Commissions activities, and they ask whether a final date should now be fixed after which no application should ie entertained by them. ‘ ■Down to June 30, 1802 cases had been before the Commission or the investigating committee.
