LONDON BANK CHIEF
SECRET RETURN FROM CANADA. HIS BODYGUARDS. London, Sept, 24. Amazing “hush hush’’ tactics were employed to keep secret the return to London from Canada of the Governor of the Bank of England, Mr. Montagu Norman. A special tender secretly landed him from the liner Duchess of Bedford inside the Mersey bar, whence he travelled by train to London. The police cleared the platform at Euston Station by drawing up a barrage of porters and hand-trucks, and thus kept the inquisitive away. In addition there was a special “anti-interview bodyguard” to keep Pi - ess representatives from speaking to Mr. Norman. The only person allowed to welcome him was the eminent economic authority, Sir Josiah Stamp. The elaborate precautions also imcluded an arrangement which permitted Mr. Norman to leave the train from the guard’s van, which was stopped opposite to where a fast motor-car was drawn up. Looking neither to right nor left, Mr. Norman, who was pale, and had a serious expression, hurriedly entered the car and was driven off. According to the Daily Mail, Mr. Norman docs not intend to stand for reelection to tho Governorship of the Bank of England because of ill-health.
