SPEED RECORDS ON ROADS
FINE OF £2O AT AUCKLAND. PROSECUTED ON BOOKLET. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Sept. 21. Kenneth Wilkinson, of Cambridge, was to-day fined £2O at Otahuhu Court for dangerous driving while on a recordbreaking trip from Auckland, to Wellington. The Highways Board inspector, who prosecuted, said that certain times were quoted by Wilkinson in the booklet he published and, -when questioned, he said, that every statement w~s true. Ac* cording to the booklet, the car took 21 minutes to travel from Auckland to Papakura, which represented a speed, of 54 miles an hour. Defendant left Auckland at 4 o’clock on Easter Tuesday morning. Defendant’s counsel denied that his speed endangered anyone. The inspector told the Magistrate that the Highways Board wanted the practice stopped, as others had tried to beat defendant’s record. Counsel: “But they failed.” The Magistrate said the full penalty was £lOO, and a repetition of the offeneo would be very costly to the offender. He would like to see the authorities take proceedings on all sections of the ro®4> between Auckland and Wellington.
