STREET BEAUTIFICATION

TREE PLANTING IN THE BOROUGH. ORDER OF WORK AGREED UPON. In connection with the scheme to trees in the streets and on suitable corners, the beautifying committee recently set up. reported, to the New Plymouth Borough Council last night that it had inspected various parts ot tne borough under consideration for beautifiC In accordance with the committee's recommendations, the council authorised the borough engineer to carry out the following as relief works:— (a) To complete the laying-out of. Wakefield Street by straightening, up the edge of the street and finalising the planting. (b) To straighten up and plant out the triangle at the junction of South Road and Breakwater Road. (e) To straighten up and plant out. the triangle at the junction of Whiteley Street and Breakwater Road. Replying to Mr. Benoni White regarding his suggestion for the beautification of Leach Street, near Hobson Street, the committee had written that this street was on the list for future consideration. It was stated that Mr. T. C. List had been appointed, chairman of the committee. The chairman, Or. Robertson, and Mr. V. C. Davies had been appointed to supervise the work in Avenue Road and Wakefield Street. Mr. F. Parker would act in a similar capacity in connection with the work on the two triangles on the Breakwater Road. - The council decided to make available to the committee when possible the services of Mr. R. Bennoch, the sexton. The Mayor said that the stone required at the Breakwater Road triangles would be supplied free by the Harbour Board, the only cost to the council being that of cartage. . Or. Brown believed the planting of trees would make an asset to the town. The only objection he saw was that complaints would be made that ratepayers could not get money spent on streets or paths, yet the council could find money for this sort of work. If the council had the money, he agreed the beautification of corners was a commendable work. The Mayor said the cost of cartage would be infinitesimal. He considered that when the results of the beautification schemes were visible councillors and ratepayers would agree the work was worth while. Crs. Amoore and Robertson endorsed what the Mayor had said. The latter remarked that it would be a great mistake to throw a damper on the schemes at the present time.
