NEED TO DEVELOP BOWLERS
NEW ZEALAND CRICKET TOUR. SELECTOR REVIEWS RESULTS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Sept. 19. Admitting that the side was known to be weak in bowling before the tour commenced, Mr. W. S. Brice, chairman of the selection committee, thinks that the New Zealand cricket team has done remarkably well in Britain considering the weather. “Of course,” he said, “we knew before the team sailed that the bowling was weak, but it was the best available. With that handicap the team did splendidly, as with all teams there have been failures. I mean that several members have not done as well as we expected. Dempster, Vivian and James have, of course, ■been successes. Page batted well on occasions only. Lowry, handicapped probably by his dual position as captain and manager, hrfi not performed with the same degree of success as in 1927, but if you study Lowry’s scores you will see that he made his runs when most needed and against the best teams. I expected more runs from Weir and Page. “In comparing the performances on this tour with those of 1927 you must remember that this team has had to contend with bad weather, and has played against stronger teams. The “find” of the tour is Vivian, and he and the rest of them should come back rich in experience. I think that the tour has made it apparent that before New Zealand can confidently claim to be in the top class wo will have to find and develop bowlers.”
