The total for the corresponding period last year was 53,762. The quantity of coal, including bunkers, shipped, at Newcastle during August for places beyond the State, was 147,677 tons, of which 5503 tons represented overseas bunkers. The decrease during August, compared with July, was 28,205 tons. Compared with August, 1930, the export showed a decrease of 5323 tons. PASSAGE RATES REDUCED. After an exhaustive survey of the extremely difficult conditions ruling in the North Atlantic trade, the Conference Lines, whose representatives have been meeting in Paris, have decided to institute substantial reduction in passage rates. It is announced that in regard to the first class, the cuts will range from 10 to 30 per cent., and in the tmrd class they will vary round a basic figure of 13 per cent., the reductions to be put into force on August 17. Other concessions are to be introduced, among these being a considerable scaling down of supplementary charges in the second cabin and tourist classes, while tourist passengers will no longer be issued with third-class labels. It was emphasised ■by Dr. Kiep, of the Hamburg-American Line, who presided over the deliberations of the conference, that there was complete unanimity in reaching the decisions, and that the considerable sacrifices involved, affording great advantages to the travelling public, represent finality in the matter of reductions. The action taken by the shipping companies will, it . is hoped, check the serious decline which has marked the passenger returns, states the Syren and Shipping. The harmonious spirit which has evidently prevailed throughout the deliberations is a good augury and an indication that all the companies represented in the conference recognise the necessity for friendly co-op-eration in handling a situation which threatened to produce very serious consequences to all.
