HIGH SCHOOL CLUB’S REPORT. SUCCESSFUL SEASON RECORDED. A successful season of school cricket was recorded in the annual report of the Hawera High School Cricket Club. . “The . first eleven, playing senior cricket, gave many enterprising displays and more than held its own with the other teams in the competition," stated the report. “As usual, great interest centred in the school games for the Silson Cup, which, won meritoriously the previous season, was retained by the school eleven by sustaining challenges from both the Feilding Agricultural High School and the Stratford Technical High School. The junior championship shield was lost to the Stratford club’s junior team after much promising cricket had been shown . . the members of the school.second eleven. “The thanks of the club are due to the following people for assistance rendered the club during the season: Messrs., Buckeridge, McCarthy and Veale for their services as umpires in the interschool games and to others who have served in a similar capacity during the, progress of the various competition games, the parents and friends of the, school who billeted the Feilding boys during their visit to Hawera, the lady teachers and girls of the school for their work and support during the games, the teachers whose valuable time was so freely given in the inf rests of the various teams, and To all those who have helped to foster cricket in the school.’ 1 The election of officers resulted i Patron, Mr. B. McCarthy; president, the headmaster (Mr. A, Gray);, vice-presi-dents, male members of the staff; club captain, R. F. Thrush; vice-captain, L. Edwards; honorary secretary, G. H. Gibson; committee, J: E. Emmitt, L. E. Duke, D. G. Buist and H. McGlade. The headmaster spoke of the great prominence of New Zealand cricket, referring mainly to the success of the present tourists. He also referred to the valuable coaching the members of the school teams had received from the masters and thanked them for their services. Mr. Thomas and Mr. Whitehead were, he considered, assisting to provide a valuable source from which South Taranaki was finding its spirited cricketers.

PATEA CRICKET CLUB. TRIBUTE PAID LATE MEMBER. Mr. E. F. Hemingway presided, at the annual meeting of the Patea Cricket Club on Friday night. Sympathy was expressed with the relatives of Mr. J. Smith, whose death had created a breach in the Patea club that would be difficult to fill. Mr. Smith’s knowledge of cricket and his willingness to umpire haff made his services invaluable. Profit on the working account amounted to a little over £3, stated the secretary in submitting a financial report on the past season’s activities. The election of officers resulted: President, Mr. E. F. Hemingway; secretary, Mr. L.'F. Jones; Mr. J. Smith was appointed to captain the team when able to be present, the team to elect its captain on the ground on other occasions. The committee will consist of Messrs. D. Paterson, J. Petersen and officers exofficio. The fee for honorary members was fixed at ss. It was resolved that the club participate in the South Taranaki Division fixtures in the coming season. Messrs. F. Hamel and L. Jones were appointed the club’s delegates to the association. Messrs. P. Bourke, J. 0. Daniell and Connor were elected club members. The gold medal for the member obtaining the highest batting average in competition matches was won by Mr. Cyril Palmer, Alton. The medal was donated by Mr. P. Palmer. A photograph of the team which Included the late Mr. Smith was presented to Mr. J. Smith. Appreciation of Master Close’s keen following of the team’s fortunes and his accurate scoring was made, the boy being appointed official scorer to the club. PATEA COURSING CLUB. IMPROVEMENT OF FINANCES.' Mr. T. Bowen presided over a well attended meeting of the Patea Coursing Club on Friday. Regret at Mr. L. Hunt’s absence through illness was expressed. The Patea jubilee executive wrote asking that the club be represented in the jubilee procession. All sports bodies, it was hoped, would be represented. It was decided that the suggestion be supported and that a number of members and dogs would take part in the procession. Reference to the borrowing of seven hares by the club from the Waitara Coursing Club was made in a letter asking for their return. The hares, were borrowed by the club on the occasion of the Waterloo Cup meeting at Patea. It was decided that as soon as the hares were procurable they wqyld be returned. If permission is obtainable from the National Coursing Association it was decided to hold a meeting on September 30. The secretary was instructed to wire the association for permission to use that date. Mr. T. Scott, secretary, suggested that a maiden, open and sapling stakes constitute the programme. A maiden stake for 16 dogs that have not won more than £5 in any one stake, an open stake for 16 dogs and sapling stakes at £2 2is, £2 2s and £1 nominations respectively was decided upon. It was decided that those who officiated at the last meeting ■bo appointed to act again. Appreciation of the improved financial position and the secretary’s efforts to bring about the improvement was expressed when the secretary submitted a report of the club’s financial position. Receipts totalled £S£{7 14s 4d and expenditure £220 13s Wd, with outstanding liabilities of £2 0s fid. Assets, including cash in bank, totalled £l5 17s fid.
