RUGBY FOOTBALL

TARANAKI PLAY GAINS PLACE IN CANTERBURY REPRESENTATIVE RUGBY TEAM. ■ From a Correspondent. New Plymouth. Boys’ High School can; welt be proud of the football exploits of Alan H. Andrews, of Okato, who has .been picked to represent Canterbury to-day (Saturday 25 th,) -in its- first .interprovincial ganie against the towering-South-land team at Lancaster Park, Christchurch. It will be remembered that Andrews was head boy at New Plymouth last year, and as captain of the first-fifteen, he was noted for hie consistently sound game, both on attack and defence. This is hie freshman’s year at Canterbury College, -where he is studying in the Bachelor of Engineering course, and he has represented in football his hostel, College House, and his Varsity in all its club matches. "He has also been picked to. play for Canterbury College in the annual match against’Otago Varsity to be played at Dunedin shortly. His exhibition in club games throughout the whole season has been of a consistently high standard, and it comes as ho great surprise, that he hap been picked to represent his new province after some five month’s residence.

Alan has been a source of strength to Canterbury Varsity in every match this season. He has no fixed position in the team, although he usually plays among the forwards. So versatile and adaptable is his style of play, that he usually goes into apy position which shows a weakness at the time. If one of the backs is injured, Alan steps into his breach. His usual place is back ranker, but He has played. some brilliant games as centre and wing forward. It is in the latter position that he plays for Canterbury. Andrew’s success lies chiefly in his ability te fit himself, into hblhi, back; and forward machine,: He. is .a;'brilliant ifidivL. dualist and a consistent scorer, but ,he does pot sacrifice'his team’s chance of success' to cover himself with glory. If a forward' movement ig likely to .succeed/ Alan wilt he the initiator,. If . a hack .mqvemqht promises wejl, Jbe will be ready : in ..support, His judgment is uncanny, arid fie is always within easy reach of the ball. . ■ ’_,' His tackling is low and deadly anejhis hickibg brilliant. He usually takes the kick after a scorb, and has ..converted qilite a number of tries this season. A hard worker bn the field, and. a brilliant player,' with an intimate knowledge of the game, he thoroughly. deserves all th® success he bas gained' this seaspp., .. ~.,( ,' ' When the N.Z. Varsity team. WM, being chosen for the Australian tour a couple of months ago, Alan waa -among those nominated by hiq varsity together with? J. W. Ewart of New (Plymouth. Both were playing good rugby, but Jaek.had the advantage of having played for Otago the previous peason and was chosen to go.' ’ Bptfi / are certain to gain college:.“blues,'*.-and-Alan has an excellent .change of gaining place in the South Island representative teaffi, nominations; for which 'will be /.made shortly. A rugby critic, who saw Aljjn in action for the first time, a few. Saturdays ago, expressed' tfie. opinion; that he learned hjs. football in a, good school, aijd that he was certain to' go a long way m the game. FINDS rqr VARSITY. Jack Ewart, who was‘picked as a certainty for the Canterbury team on his brilliant showing in Australia and in Canterbury senior games this' season, had the misfortune to receive rather a severe concussion in a recent competition game, and it is probable that he will- not- play ■ again this season. His sparkling, clean, play. and initiative in the five teighib’s, hiie,- had made him a favourite with '■rugby followers in Christchurch, ' and jt ■ wap distinctly; bad luck which put an end, to his football career this season, just when he-had been picked to train for the; representative team, especially so after finishing a hard Australian tour without, the slightest injury. Young and promising players are encouraged in Christchurch, and both Ewart and Andrews are considered this season’s “finds,” for Varsity and Canterbury.

Andrews is following in the footsteps of Syd. Fookes, Jack Galbraith, L«\ Lover’ idge and Don Grant, who all represented, Canterbury while they were at Canterbury, College, after performing well? iri; interr qollegiate football. Other New-Plymouth players who are playing for representative teams this season are J. D.-. Maekay (Wellington) and H. F. Fookes (Otago)., H. M. Thomson, of New Plymouth, this year’s president of the Canterbury College Students’ Association, has played a consistently good game as back for Canterbury. Varsity, and has been selected to 'play against Otago Varsity. at Dunedin; shortly. Les. Loveridge, who received - an injury: early in the' season, has • not ' rejoined Varsity yet, but hopes tp be ‘back. again on the wing shortly. With? both: Ewart and Loveridge away at the samp- time,G,aqter* bury Varsity’s hack lipe has-not: been as strong the last 'f(ew Saturdays as; it was earlier in the season. Although not ..high in the senior poinpetition, at the present time it has four of jta. members in the Canterbury representative team.
