The Hon. S. G. Smith, Minister of Labour, will arrive at New Plymouth this afternoon and will remain for the week-end. Mr. J. Burns has been selected to contest the Wellington South scat for the United Party, states a Press Association message.

Mr. C. A. Grainger, who has been in charge of Messrs. J. B. Mac Ewan and Co.’s depot at Opunake for two years, has received advice of his appointment to a position in the South Island, and will leave at an early date.'

Promoted to the position of United States Consul at Melbourne, Mr. John W. Dye, American Consul at Wellington, will leave New Zealand towards the end of September, states a Wellington Press Association message. Mr. George Stock, barrister, of Gisborne, formerly of the firm of De Latour, Barker, and Stock, died recently, aged 05. Mr. Stock retired from active practice a few years ago on account of ill-health. He was a Southland Rugby representative, and also took a keen interest in cricket, tennis and bowling. Ono of the oldest residents of Wanganui, Mr. James Cannons, a settler who had resided over 60 years in the district, died on Wednesday at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. S. J. Catran, Haweru. He was 81 years of age. His wife predeceased him two years ago, also in her 81st year. Mr. Cannons was born in Berkshire (England) and caiiic to New Zealand about 1870, landing at Wanganui and living there practically all his life. Mr. Cannons was a landscape gardener and was keenly interested in the beautification of the town and suburbs and in the horticultural societies of years ago. Most of the beauty spots Were laid out by him and will be a lasting memorial to liis work. Besides Mrs. Catran there are four daughters, Mrs. I. IM. Kidd and Mrs. D. J. Pepper (New Plymouth), Mrs. K. A. Jenkins (Auckland) and Dlrs. E. AV. Hird (Wellington), and three sons—Messrs. James (King Country), Alexander G. (Christchurch) and Ernest (Wellington).
