DRAMATIC ARREST

SHOT FIRED IN CITY . 1 |

LEAP FROM MOVING CAR.

Sydney, July 18.

Constable Kollock and a man. who was wanted by the police participated in a dramatic . chase through Sydney City streets, after the suspect, had jumped, from a rapidly-moving motor-car. The policeman fired once, but the fugitive took no heed and ran into a warehouse in Wilmot Street. He was finally arrested on a high landing from which escape was impossible. Constable Kellock was on duty near the corner of King and Castlercagh Streets, City, when he noticed a man, who is suspected of having stolen a motor-car in Victoria, standing on the pavement outside a hotel. A motor-car was drawn up against the kerb. The constable spoke to the suspect for some time. Then he told him lie would have to go to the Central Police Station to answer some questions. The two men entered the motor-car and the suspect drove toward the station. Instead of turning into Central Lane, where the police station is situated, the driver accelerated. Consta—a Kellock seized his arm and piloted the machine into Liverpool Street. “Turn up George Street and enter the lane that way,” ho said. The driver again passed the entrance to the lane. Then he suddenly opened the door near his seat and jumped from the car, which was travelling ,at a fair speed. The policeman seized the . steering wheel and brought the machine to a standstill. Ho ran into Wilmot Street and saw the fugitive in a doorway. While he was still some yards distant the man drew what appeared to be a pistol from his pocket and fired. There was a loud report. The policeman did not heard until later that the pistol had been made to scare burglars, and was harmless, though it contained a large blank cartridge. Constable Kellock drew his own revolver and fired once. The fugitive wheeled and disappeared through the doorway of a ■warehouse. Constable Kellock found him among bales of merchandise, and finally arrested him on n. landing at the rear of the building.
