AIR PILOTS’ A LICENSES
WESTERN FEDERATION PUPILS.
THREE HAWERA MEN SUCCESSFUL.
Three Western Federated (North Island) Flying Club pupils and members of the Hawera Aero Club, Messrs. B. Davis, B. Nicholas and T. McCarten, were successful in gaining their A licenses when examined by Wing-Commander S. GrantDalton at the Dunlop Field Aerodrome yesterday. Weather conditions, which had. been ideal early in the day, gave way to a tricky wind later, and the skill of the pupils was fully tested. Wing-Commander Grant-Dalton arrived at Hawera shortly after 10 a.m. in a plane piloted by Squadron-Leader J. L. Findlay. Dr. W. F. Buist, president of the local club, welcomed, him, other club officials present being Messrs. W. G. Walkley (secretary) and C. . Freyberg. Flying-Officer T. Keith, pilot instructor, and Flying-Officer J. M. Buckeridge (Hawera) were also in attendance. In addition, Pilots E. Meredith (New Plymouth) and B. Haybittie (Hawera) were examined for an endorsement. of their A licenses to permit the carrying of passengers. Both endorsements were granted. Haybittie’s being subject to the completion of the nine hours’ solo flying required to make up his 40 hours. Squadron-Leader Findlay and WingCommander Grant-Dalton left for Wanganui about 2 p.m. Miss Jane Winston, Messrs. T. and P. Bennett, J. Strachan and J. Craig, members of the Wanganui Aero Club, will all be examined- for their A tickets at Wanganui to-day. BUSINESS NOTICES. Next Wednesday, at the Kapuni hall, another foxtrot competition will be held. The popularity of these has induced the hall'committee to arrange this competition specially for those who have not obtained an award at previous contests. Several popular Monte Carlos will be held, and free buses will run from Hawera, Stratford, Manaia and Kaponga. Another fancy dress carnival dance is to be held at Oaonui to-morrow night, when good prizes will be offered. There will also be several Monte Carlo dances, good prizes being offered. 4 The Manaia Ladies’ Hockey Club will hold a hockey ball in the Manaia Town Hall to-morrow evening, when a big programme of novelties will .be presented. Free buses will run from Hawera, Kaponga and Okaiawa. A Catholic dance is to .be held at the Kaponga Town Hall on August 4. A free bus is to run from Stratford, via Eltharn. There will be novelty dances and an excellent supper. J. C. Smith advertises particulars of his mart sale at Hawera to-day, commencing at 1.30 p.m., with produce, circular saw and attachment for Ford car, motor-cycle coats, furniture and fruit.
R. P. Morrissey and Co. advertise particulars, of: sales at the Union Street salerooms, Hawera, to-day at 11 a.m. and 1.15 p.m. Attention is drawn to-the sale to-day of 120 high-class Jersey 'springing heifers at the Hawera yards. This vVill probably be one of the best lines of heifers ever gathered together and offered to the public at Hawera, and great care is being taken to ensure that none but animals that are close to profit shall be yarded. The sale is timed to start at 12.30, and the heifers will be offered in the dairy pavilion.
