THE OLD IMPLACABLE. DUKE OF YORK'S APPEAL. The Duke of York made an appeal recently for the preservation of HALS. Implacable—the last survivor of Trafalgar afloat—as a holiday training ship for boys. He was speaking at a luncheon in aid of the fund at Fishmongers’ Hall. “The committee do not want to make professional seamen,” the Duke said, ‘“their aim is wider. They want boys of all social ranks to be able to spend their holidays on board the ship; boys from
the British Isles, from the Dominions and the colonies, and boys, too, from the United States, who share so closely oui sea traditions. “When the Implacable was doomed to the shipbreakers’ yard in 1908,” the- Duke continued, ‘‘the late Sir. GeoflryM heatlj Cobb, who, with his father, had already saved Nelson’s Foudroyant, obtained a respite by an appeal to King Edward.; For 17 years he kept her at Falmouth at his own' expense, and five years ago £25,000 was raised for her restoration. ■ “To Mr. Cobb's memory,” the Duke added, “the British people owe the £30,000 which is needed as an endowment fund for the Implacable’s - permanent maintenance, and without. wliiph she cannot be considered safe. If this sum cannot be obtained she is once more in danger of the shipbreakers. After all the
care and money spent on her that fate is unthinkable.” Lord Lloyd, who presided, announced that the Duke was among those who had contributed to the fund.
