A London message reports the death of Sir Frederick Milner, M.P., aged 82. Princess Marie Louise passed a night, and showed slight improvement, states a London cable. Mr. Winston Churchill will go to the United Slates in the autumn to deliver 45 lectures at a fee of £2’oo each, states a London cable.

Mr. E. Douglas Tayler, supervisor of music in schools, announced yesterday that he had resigned and was proceeding abroad, states a Wellington message. The death is reported from Cambridge of Mr. Arthur Towsey, aged 85. He was well-known in musical circles in the Dominion, particularly in Dunedin, Christchurch, Auckland and Wanganui, where he held appointments as organfet. Mrs. .Edward Dunn, of Main .Street, Greytown, celebrated 'her 88th birthday last week. Mrs. Dunn, who was born in Wellington, is a daughter of the late Mr. Thomas Kempton, ono of the first settlers to arrive in Greytown, and. its first Mayor. She has resided in Greytown for 78 years, and can thus claim the distinction of having lived longer in the town than any other person.

Mr. W. C. Green was re-elected chairman of the Egmont County Council at the annual meeting yesterday. Cr. v. Gibson said that Mr. Green had rendered excellent service in the past and he considered he was an excellent man to fill the position. Crs. Collins and Lilley supported these remarks. Mr. Green thanked the councillors for their confidence and said he would always do his best in the interests of the ratepayers. Inspector Rawle, who has been a member of the Public Service Superannuation Board for over two years, has resigned on account of his transfer to New Plymouth. He has received from the board recognition and--appre-ciation of his services as c fPy “ the following resolution: . The board desires to place on record, its a PP tion of the services renderea by Mr. Rawle during the time he has ’been a member of the Public Service Superannuation Board.’’

Sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr H. C. R. Hudson, formerly a student of New Plymouth Boys’ High School, was expressed at the recent annual meeting of the Canterbury College Boxing Club, Christchurch. A brilliant student he gained the Second Year Exhibition in Engineering at tne end of 1930. In 1929 he joined the Boxing Club of which he was an active member and represented Canterbury College in the annual inter-University Tournament at Auckland in 1930, this being the first year he was eligible to represent his college.

An old and respected citizen of Palmerston North, Major John Mounsey, 0.8. E., passed away on Monday after a severe and protracted illness. Major Mounsey, who was proprietor of the auctioneering firm of John Mounsey and Co., was GO years of age. He was born in Lancashire, England, in 1871 and at the age of nine years came to the Dominion, landing at Auckland. Major Mounsey later went to Palmerston North, commencing business as an auctioneer and general commission agent over thirty years ago. Prominently associated with the volunteer and territorial forces, he was one of the bestknown military officers in the Dominion. He was an officer of the old Palmerston North Volunteer Rifles until the force was disbanded in 1912 and an artillery battalion formed. He was appointed first captain of this unit and later was promoted to the rank of major. At the beginning of the Great War he was appointed, quartermaster at Trentham military training camp, which position he held during the war period. At the conclusion of the war Major Mounsey was awarded, the Order of British Empire for his services at the camp, while he also received the long service medal for sixteen years’ continuous service.
