APPOINTMENTS AND TRANSFERS.

MONTHLY MEETING OF THE BOARD

The monthly meeting of the Taranaki Education Board was held at New Plymouth yesterday, when there were present Messrs. J. A. Valentine (deputychairman), P. J. H. White, A. Lees, W. H. Jones and H. Dempsey.

In connection- with the proposal to erect a movable school at Patua the Director of Education wrote that as it appeared that the school .would hot be required except fop a nam ber of children of sawmillere the department was of opinion that the owners of the mill.should provide the neccseary timber for the school building and fencing posts. Mr. Lees did not consider that it was a fair proposition to expect the millers to find the timber.

Air. .Jones pointed out that it would be impossible for them to do so a$ there was no planing plant available. It was stated that it would be preferable and certainly more economical to convey the children to the HurWotth school, a very reasonable tender fop conveyance having been received. It was resolved “That ■ this meeting of the Taranaki Education Board disapproves of the proposals made by the department by which the settlers were called upon to. supply the timber for the erection of a school. It was also resolved that the department be recommended to accept the tender received for the conveyance Of children to the Hurworth school. TEACHING APPOINTMENTS. On the recommendation of the teachers’ election committee it was resolved that the appointment of Aliases Oyston, Jonee and Greatbatch as. additional assistants respectively at Heao, Tokirima and Toko, be confirmed, and that the appointment; of Al ire At. Moore) reported as follows: — Alidhirst le-modelling.—The and Te-modelling were finished and the buildings are in occupation. A plan was prepared and application made for a movable classroom at Kiritehere. The following is the list of projected works in order of urgency:— Schools.—Westown. additions; Whakamara, Opkura, replacement; Pilnima, replacement; Inglewood. new school; Tataraimaka, remodelling; Kofito, replacement; Lincoln, re-instateinent; Patna- movable school; .Kiritehere, movable school; Tautjakawa. household school. borough, new residences Eltharu, manual building. Cohveyance.-i-HaparUa children to Ohura school; Durham Road to Inglewood; Kota settlement to Huiroa. MANUAL AND TECHNICAL. On the recommendation of the manual and technical committee it was resold ed:-— That the supervisor be asked to report it next meeting on the establishment of domestic science classe*. That the department be asked approval of the* appointment of Mrs. Dick as part-time instructre£fe in dressmaking at the Manaia District High School. That the supervisor be asked to report'to the next board meeting regarding the inclusion of the Ohßura pupils for manual instruction, but that Mr, Valentine be asked to act on the information furnished meantime. That the supervisor’s action in including Lincoln Road and Kaponga school be approved and that the department’s approval be asked. It was reported that with an increased attendance of pupils A reduction in the cost of conveyance in accordance with the lowered departmental grant* to the extent of over £3O Was n)ade, this amount being atso saved to the department. That further inquiry into the cost of accident insurance be made before dropping conveyance of the Rotqkare pupils. The manual supervisor (Mt. D. Mackay) reported as follows: Classes commenced at the centres on February 4, the instructors being occupied for the two previous days in the preparation of the centres. New schools attending the classes are Kaponga, ''Lincoln Road, Matiere and Niho Niho. Owing to serious illness Mr. C. Kibblewhite has been compelled to relinquish the position of part-time instructor at the Ohura centre. Mr. R. G. Clarke is at present filling the position. Material and equipment replacements to put the centre* in efficient order have been ordered and forwarded to the various centres, and all'centres are in working order. There are further requirements which , would improve the centres, but that the present is a time for carrying oh with the bare necessities rather than for asking for every "ouvenience is well appreciated by the instructional stall. “A supply of light woodwork material is being prepared at the board’s workshop for distribution to the schools having this work already established.
