£lO 9 0 URENUI DISTRICT EFFORTS. (From Our Own Correspondent) ' i Committees have been organised in all parte of the Urenui district in furtherance of the campaign for funds for the assistance of those rendered destitute as a result of the recent, earthquake in the Napier and Hastings districts. Strong committees have been formed .at Pukearuhe, Urenui .nd Okoke and public subscription lists have been opened at Dunbar’s store,the Urenui Hotel, and Rogers and Sons’ store. Free carriage of parcels from all parts, of the district has been offered by carriers and bus proprietors, and goods will be received at the depot at Urenui (Dunbar’s Stores, Ltd.). A meeting of the Urenui Returned Soldiers’ Association was held recently and it was decided to donate £5 5s to the relief funds. Further efforts are to be made, and it was decided to hold a monster dance in the Urenui Hall. Buses from all roads have offered free services to the hall. Supper and orchestral music will be donated. A substantial sum the funds' should result. - i The Urenui Seaside Society’s fortnightly dance held in the hall on Saturday night was patronised by residents from all parts of the district. The music was provided by Jack Renton’s orchestra and Mr. C. Henwood officiated as M.C. The proceeds were donated to the relief funds. . The novelty dance held in the Pukearuhe Hall on Friday evening last under the auspices of the local relief fund committee was attended by a representative gathering of local residents and visitors from outlying districts. The proceeds amounting to £8 are with other sums raised being given to the Red Cross funds. Mr. H. Wells (chairman) announced that j £2O had been collected at the public meet- ; ing held on Friday. A' heifer donated by Mr. Brightwell was -auctioned during the evening and realised £2. Novelty dances were held during the evening and resulted in Mr. and Mrs. Chard winning the first Monte Carlo Waltz and Mr. T. Oxenham and Miss A. Rattenbury the second Monte Carlo. The Lucky Spot was won by Miss B. Luxton and Mr. Alex Phillips. The secretarial duties were carried out by Mr. R. Blake, whose efforts left nothing to be desired. The dance music w : as provided ’ by Renton’s band and the duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr. Bert Drury. A dainty eupper was provided and dispensed by ladies of the district.
