LESS LUXURIOUS TEAS

DISBANDMENT OF CLUB. FUNDS TO EARTHQUAKE RELIEF. The disbandment of the Less Luxurious Teas Club, which was formed early last year by a number of Auckland, hostesses, was decided upon at a meeting cf the committee held in the Lyceum Club last week. The club was formed with the object of providing more simple fare at social gatherings, and subscribing the money thus saved to some central fund for needy cases. . Speaking at a bridge afternoon held in March of last year, when the movement was first suggested, Mrs. W. H. Parkes, president of the Lyceum Club, said there had of late years been evolved a veritable feast of good things at social entertainments, followed quite frequently by digestive disturbances and regrets that the cream puffs and savouries had proved too attractive. She pointed out that the expense of the modern afternoon tea had become a serious matter for the hostess of moderate means, which often meant that sho either had to forego the pleasure

of entertaining her friends, or else provide a tea that was less elaborate than those to which they were accustomed, and sometimes, as a result, be regarded as mean. With so many appeals for the deserving poor, the ladies interested did not consider it right to waste so much money on luxurious food, which was quite unnecessary. It was announced at the meeting last week that there . were . 45 members of the club, who had paid a subscription

of five shillings if marired and 2s. 6d. if single, the total funds in hand being £ll. Regret was expressed at the neces.ity to disband the club, owing to the fact that it had not received the support it merited. It was considered, however, that the object had been achieved to a great extent, teas now being generally of a much simpler nature. It was agreed that the money in hand should be donated to the Mayor’s-earth-quake relief fund.
