L. STEVENS WINS ROAD RACE.

FASTEST TIME CREDITED TO EVA

Owing to the rain only ope race coqld be decided at the New Plymouth League Cycle Club’s weekly meeting, which was held last evening. The first-class handicap was postponedytiintil- neXt ’Tuesday evening. L. Stevens and H- Eva both recorded fiiie performances for first season riders in winning and gaining points

The details, of the race are:— First, of series for a trophy, Bell Block Monument.apd back, from Waiwakaiho Flat. Four miles and a-half. L. Stevens (Imin), Umin 40sec ... 1 S. Rodgers (SOsec), Umin 10.1-S.seq 2 W. Martin. (Imin 20sec), 12min Ssec -3 B. Gilbert (Imin 20sec), 12min 35sec ■. 4 H. Eva (lOsec), Umin Ssec . 5 Also started: T- Horner (scr), B. Sole (•20see), W. Jones. (50sec), E. Harnish (2min). H. Eva -gained fastest time, Umin Ssec.

Harnish led most of the way but, and put up a game fight to hold the lead. Had it not been for the head wind bn the. return journey, he -would probably have won. As it was he was caught 'only half a mile from the finish. Stevens and. Rodgers," both riding well, caught Gilbert and Martin soon after the turn and these four, closely followed by Eva, Sole and Jones, worked hard to catch Harnish, .who was riding alone. Stevens, Rodgers and Martin caught the pacemaker half a mile from the finish and Stevens and Rodgers went on alone. Fifty yards from the finish Rodgers appeared to be a winner, but Stevens,, in producing a surprisingly good finishing effort, forged ahead ten yards from the post to win by a wheel. The rest of the field was close up. The races, next Tuesday evening will commence at 5,45 p.m.
