POPULARISING EGMONT

WORK OF EAST COMMITTEE.

PUBLICITY CAMPAIGN PLANNED.

Durin<r January he had been stumpincx on the north side of the house, reported the caretaker, Air. A. Haldane, to a meeting last night of the East Committee of the Egmont National Park Board. Second growth, Air. Haldane added, had been cut and the rubbish burned. Though there was a lot still to be dene there was a good space cleared. ■ , , Air. Haldane had blasted dangerous overhanging rock on the track in the Alanganui Gorge and had cleared the track on the far side as. well as widening it at the entrance to the gorge. It was now safe, he considered. Air. W. Pettigrew reported that he had planted trees and shrubs and filled in most of the open spaces on the south side of the track. Scrub and rubbish should be cut during the a,utumn to make room for further planting during the winter. . -The question of advertising Stratford and the mountain house was considered from all angles and it was decided to take steps to raise money for the production .of a booklet describing the town and surrounding attractions. As an initial effort the chairman. Air. J. C. Robins, will interview the Stratford ■picture Company with a view to arrano’inw a benefit entertainment, while Air °N.° H. Aloss will ask the Stratford branch of the S-T.A.A. to include in the circulars to members references to the attractions offered by the east side of .Egmont. The chairman stated that a light stretcher and a comprehensive first-aid outfit had been installed at the house and another lighter stretcher for use at high altitudes was being made. Application, will be made to the Park Board for a sum up to £25 towards the cost of building an emergency shelter somewhere near Ngarara (a bluff north, of the Manganui Gorge). It is not intended to build a pretentious hut but its character will be governed more or less by the nature of the site, which will be the subject of a conference between members of the Stratford Mountain Club and a sub-committee consisting of . Messrs. Robins, T. R. Anderson ami R. V. Kay. ' a . The committee having been ofiereu 2000 redwood plants at a nominal cost, it was decided to apply to the board for a grant of £35 for material to fence that piece of ground on the left of the road from Barclay Road to the reserve gates in order that afforestation may be done there. If the board will grant the sum required the labour will be secured under the No. 5 unemployment scheme. The board will be asked to reconsider a suggestion made two years ago that season tickets be issued to cover a car and its driver against toll charges.

FUTURE HOSPITAL. EXTENSION.

PORTIA STREET LAND TOO DEAR.

The Stratford Hospital Board’s project to secure from the borough council a piece of ground in Portia Street with a view to assuring that the hospital buildings may be extended as required has received a severe check unless the council is prepared to accept a considerably smaller sum than the £365 which was quoted to the board at its meeting yesterday. The price suggested by the council was one arrived at by an independent valuer. “I think that amount is exorbitant,” said the chairman. He personally valued the land at £lOO to £l5O, and he had had his figures confirmed by land agents. “We certainly cannot afford to pay £365,” said Mr. Belcher. Mrs. Phillips moved that the board offer £lOO. The board would have to pay the cost of survey and transfer, he said. This would amount to an extra £5O or so. That was all the area was worth, said ’ Mr. O’Neill, for much of it was gully and swamp. The motion, was carried.

KING’S THEATRE TALKIES.

“SWEETIE” FINALLY TO-NIGHT.

What a great cast there is in the new Paramount youth and joy picture, “Sweetie,” which shows at the King's Theatre finally to-night. Built for fun and gladness, “Sweetie” is the breath of youth. The story is of youth, the people are young, and there is happiness, throughout. Not a dull moment, not a passing cloud of sadness to cast a shadow. Heading the special cast are Nancy Carroll, Paramount’s popular red head, and Helen Kane, a newcomer to the screen. Both these young ladies add to the excitement and fun of the picture and other prominent roles are taken .by Stanley Smith, Jack Oakie and William Austin. All these players are well known with the exception of Stanley Smith, who comes to the screen for the first tims. The story is fast, fresh-and youthful.
