A survey of the route over the Lewis Saddle to the West-Coast, where there is a prospect of a highway being formed, is to be undertaken immediately by a large survey party. Air. F.' Langbein, . district engineer, Public Works Department, Christchurch, stated that this not in any way imply that the. road would be made. The object was simply to ascertain definitely the cost of forming such a road. The only estimate made so far, that it would cost about £lOO,OOO, had been based on nothing more definite than a ride on horseback over the route. It was hoped, he said, to have the survey completed before the winter was too . far advanced for the work to be continued.
