ANOTHER YEAR PASSES

OPENING OF THE NEW YEAR’S. SPORT

DOMINION-WIDE RACING TO-MORROW

REVIEW OF THE FIELDS ENGAGED

The old year closes and the new racing year begins with the old barely out of sight and we look back on the winners we backed and the winners we should have backed—the ioim that was goo and the form that puzzled—but. generally, we look upon the passing year as one in which our judgment was at fault—and we have no regrets. . /XT Throughout the Dominion there will be racing to-morrow (.New Year’s Day), and a number of important events have to be deeiued.

RACING AT STRATFORD

TARANAKI OPEHS NEW YEAR BRIGHT GLOW IS CUP FAVOURITE. WILL RIDGEMOUNT START IN SIX? Big fields are the feature of the Stratford Club's annual gathering tomorrow, but it looks as if scratchings will be fairly numerous. The programme sets the first race to be decided at 11.45 a.m.

TRIAL STAKES. Of 125 6ovs. Six furlongs

Not much is known about the 19 that remain in the Trial Stakes, but Cyville is well bred and Animated, Kentish Lad, Banbridge, Rational 11. and Bon Eve have all shown pace. Rational IL will most likely race at Wairarapa, but, if started here, he would claim a lot of attention.,. The form shown by Banbridge and Animated at New Plymouth assures heavy backing for them.

TARIKI HACK HANDICAP. Of 175 sovs. Seven furlongs and a half.

Marjoram has gone home and will not be a starter. Calamine has been running only fairly, but Singer has been meeting good class hacks at Awapuni and will find tin’s company much easier. Auctioneer and Latakia cannot be left out of calculations over this distance, and Banbridge, Ross Ferry and Joyspear stay on. In the absence of . Marjoram, Singer will probably be fancied.

STRATFORD CUP HANDICAP. Of 600 sovs. One mile and a-quarter

Bright Glow .heads the list with 9.1, and the winner of the Egmont Cup this winter is in great fettle. Seatown, whose win in the Manawatu Cup on Boxing Day was most impressive, would make a big appeal, but as he raced at Auckland it would hardly be possible for him to get back in time to race at Stratford.

True Blood won a couple of races in the Auckland province, but there are others who make more appeal. Old Yoma is still .galloping as honestly as ever, but ho has. lost a lot of the sting from his finishing efforts. Valkon and The Swell ran poorly at New Plymouth. but Orazone won the Christmas Handicap convincingly, but it is reported that her mission is not here. Hipo would make more appeal than Mint Leaf, with whom he is bracketed. The Potoa gelding ran two good races at New Plymouth. Wenday won well at New Plymouth, having improved with her race the first day. A further improvement would give her a great opportunity with a .pound above the minimum. Llanore is much below her last year’s form and Pompeius, Calamine and Monsogne all ran poor races at New Plymouth. Of the quintette on the minimum Opa should make most appeal, but he will need to improve on his sixth in the Christmas Handicap. The public will most likely be attracted by Bright Glow, Seatown (if not at Auckland), Yoma, Orazone and Wenday, but in the absence of Seatown Bright Glow looks likely to find more friends than Yoma and Wenday. OHURA HACK HURDLES.

Royal Acre goes up eight pounds in the hurdles for his win at New Plymouth, and he now has a solid impost of 11.8. Vivo would need to improve considerably, but Panorama is coming on with racing. With 10.1 Omeo is not badly treated, and there was a lot of merit in his win at New Plymouth. Joke Form, Whenuanui, Waitaunaha, and Quilltire will all carry money, though the latter seems to be one likely to appeal to the public. At this stage Royal Acre and Omeo are the favourites. JUVENILE HANDICAP.

There may not be two dividends in tho Juvenile Handicap. Valpre’a New Plymouth form was so good that she promises to be a warm fancy. Orapai ran a very poor race last week and he does not appear to be much class. Form points to the public being strongly in favour of Valpre.

DOUGLAS HANDICAP. Of 300 sovs. Six furlongs.

I Ridgemount, whose re-handicap places I him at 9.0/ won this race last year with 7.13, beating Melissa and Gold ! Dawn, who are carded to meet him at ' Stratford. Ridgemount won handsomely at New Plymouth, and if started in preference to Eonogne, would probably carry the most money. Bonogne’s dead-heat with Melissa on Friday was good, though not impressive, and Melissa, meeting him on a pound better terms' might find a bigger following. Melissa seems to be standing up to her racing well this season and she‘will 'not be neglected. Gold Dawn ran two fair races at Manawatu, and if the track hardens at all before Wednesday she is expected to play a prominent part. She has not struck her best form yet, but the sister to Bright Glow promises to be a good sort.

Oration -and Llanore ran wretched races at New Plymouth, and Macroom was not impressive at Hawera. Just So, if started in this race, would be ! making her debut in open company, but her brace of meritorious wins at : New Plymouth would warrant starting ; her here. With 8.7 and 9.4 at New Ply- ! mouth she ran great races, and her j time compared favourably with that of the open sprinters. With from 21 to ! 321 b oil her back the Chief Ruler mare •promises to lead the sprinters a merry dance. ! Monaghan ~has not been raced much : The class looks too rich for Abbess. • At this stage Ridgemount, Gold Dawn, ! Melissa and Just So are being most | discussed, but Wednesday will probably | see Ridgemount and Just So disputing favouritism.

MIDHIRST HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP Of 225 s-ovs. Eight and a-lialf furlongs. Oraj&one 9 10 Vivo 8 3

The Midhirsi Handicap would serve i The Swell better than the Cup, but hfe would need to improve a lot on his ' running at New Plymouth to win. Oralzone won over this distance at Hawera. Val-kon has ’ not struck form yet, but Manly is credited with having run a good race at Awapuni. Kawhakina would hold Mint Leaf safe, and Vivo is not consistent enough to depend on. A repetition of Poinpeius’ form in the Nolan Cup would make him prominent, but he ran an inglorious race in the Atiawa Cup. Flying Shot ran a good race at New Plymouth and Ciena Bay has won over this distance. Marjoram will not be a starter at the meeting. With Orazone out the public would probably support The Swell again, but Kawhakina, Manly and Pompeius would all carry_a lot of money. However, latest advices give the opinion that Orazone will race in this event.

There is a big field in the Railway Handicap, with Just So heading the list with 9.7. This speedy mare, however, is more likely to start in the open six. -Clever is not as good as “boomed” but Belle Star’s double win at New Plymouth cannot fail to make an impression. The Lucullus filly won splendidly on the first day, and ran an even better race the next day.' Being well-built she -seems likely to be susceptible to even more improvement with her Christmas racing. Abbess and Peg Black will not be neglected, and Green ; Acre and Tent Call will also carry ■ money. If Just So defaults, Belle Star promises to be a good favourite, and the topweight seems certain to try the open company. SUMMER TROTTING HANDICAP. CORRECTED AUCKLAND RESULT.
