Owing to the Handley Page slotted ■wing device, the number of air accidents in 1929 is the lowest for eight years. Whereas there were 34 accidents and 51 deaths in 1922, with 370 machines flown by the Royal Air Force, there were 31 accidents and 42 deaths with more than SOO machines in 1029. Parachutes are 'a subsidiary cause of the reduced death rate. They saved sixteen lives in 1929.
