RAIDS UPON BOOKMAKERS
POLICE COUP IN WAIKATO ARRESTS MADE IN VARIOUS TOWNS MAGISTRATE ISSUES WARNING, SEVERE PENALTIES INFLICTED. By Telegraph.—-Press Association. Hamilton, Last Night. . Raids -’were ‘made by ■ £hd'‘police' in various Waikato. towns this morning on premises, suspected- of being; run ‘aa •. common ga,ming houses. As a iresult five arrests- were" made' in Hamilton, while others; were effected at Morrinsville, Matamata; Rotorua and Te Puke. The raids were on an organised basis, and were the- - largest eyer conducted in the Hamilton, police district. ;- They were carried out with precision and tliorongh?'-' ness, and were over before any of the • owners of the raided premises- had ah opportunity,'- of putting the others “wise” to the-police operations. - ■ ; In the Police Court Charles - Jackson (hairdresser)': and James Henry ■. Doleman (tobacconist). were each fined £lOO for keeping, common.gaming houses. R 6» bert Irvine-, (hat-blocker) was fined £3O for a similar offence arid bookmaking, while Hillary : Quinn (insurance agent) and Charles O’Brien were each (fined £3O for bookmaking. . The Magistrate, Mr. Wyvean Wilson, said bookmakers were parasites, fend should be rightly put down. He refer-. • red not only to large, but to small, bookmakers. The small bookmaker lived on the working man, who could least afford to keep him. h . The Magistrate warned the licensees of the hotels against permitting bookmakers on their premises. Licensees were liable to jeopardise their by allowing that sort of thing to coni tinuc. '' - ’ At Morinsville Stephen Bain was fined £lOO for keeping a common ‘ gaming house.
