WHEAT MARKETING PLAN

FARMERS’ UNION PROPOSAL

CENTRALISING OF THE SORTING

INVESTIGATION BY COMMITTEE.

Bj Telegraph.—Press Association,

Wellington, Last Night. The necessity for a more up-to-date system of offering and selling New Zealand wool was stressed by Mr. F. S. Bowen (Gisborne) to the New Zealand Farmers’ Union conference to-day. He said he was convinced that in these modern days of combined buying and grouped interests a commodity that was produced by about 24,000 wool-growers, the majority of whom were small owners, had little or no protection from slumps or chance of maintaining values sufficient to give an adequate return. Mr. Bowen’s suggestions embodied the setting up of a wool realisation board. A committee consisting of Messrs. S. Bowen, J. Preston, J. D. Revie, J. F. Neal, R. S. Chadwick and J. H. Joll reported upon the proposal. The committee recommended that it would be to the advantage of the wool-growers of New Zealand to establish a wool realisation board, the functions of the board being to collect, sort and offer all wools of uniform quality in as big lots as possible in the different centres.

In the committee’s opinion the cost of the scheme would be less than at present owing, to the centralisation of sorting. Advantages to the buyer would be the fewer number of lots and an assurance of quality in the -lots, giving greater confidence. It was decided to set up a committee to act in conjunction with the Sheepowners’ Federation, with full power to make a thorough investigation into the marketing of wool and formulate a scheme whereby the existing conditions could be remedied.
