WOOLGROWERS CAMPAIGN
IMPROVEMENT OF MARKETS LEGISLATION FOR LEVY SOUGHT. EARLY OPERATION ANTICIPATED. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Sydney, July 25. A well-attended meeting of the general council of the Graziers’ Association of New South Wales fully discussed the proposed wool publicity campaign. The New Zealander, Mr. Bernard Tripp, was present as a visitor. Mr. F. 11. Tout outlined the proposals, which were unanimously approved. The meeting decided that all possible steps should be taken to bring the proposals into operation at the earliest possible moment. The president was of opinion that a levy rate of half-a-crown for £lOO on the nett receipts for wool would probably be sufficient, but the meeting agreed that it was advisable to authorise the committee in charge of propaganda to levy up to 5s on the understanding that only such amount as was necessary would be actually called up each year.
A suggestion was made that if scientific research into further uses for wool was found necessary the cost of this might be borne by the fund, the control of which should be invested in repre-' sentatives of the pastoral industry. The meeting was of opinion that a compulsory levy on woolgrowers was essential for the success of the scheme and that legislative sanction for this should be sought. The indications were that other States were increasingly in favour .of the scheme and the fullest co-operation of New Zealand sheepowners was anticipated. General approval had already been given by the Graziers’ Federal Council of Australia, and the committee ■which is considering the practicability of inaugurating the campaign is expected to report shortly to the Federal Council.
