MAGISTRATE FINES BOOKMAKER.

Auckland, Last Night.

A charge of carrying on the business of a bookmaker was preferred against Stanley McCormack, a painter, aged 33, in the Police Court this afternoon.

The police said McCormack, who was arrested only an hour or two before, had been taking bets in hotels in lower Queen Street His books showed he had transacted business worth £2O on the Gisborne and South Canterbury races. He was only in a small way. The Magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, imposed a fine of £25, saying he usually started with that amount.
