NORFOLK ISLAND SERVICE
RELEASE OF MAUI POMARE.
PRIVATE ENTERPRISE SOUGHT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. "Wellington, July 17. The rumour that the Government motor vessel Maui Pomare is to be withdrawn from the Norfolk Island service finds an answer in the annual report of the Cook and other islands presented to the House to-day. A passage in tho report says: “Owing to the growing shipping requirements of Niue and Samoa efforts are being made to induce private shippers to take over the Norfolk Island service and thus release the Maui Pomare for our own territories. It would be unfortunate if the promising trade that has been built up by the Government with Norfolk Island were lost to the Dominion owing to lack of private enterprise. The hitherto unexplored trade and passenger service to Norfolk Island is steadily increasing and the interest of the New Zealand public in this island both for pleasure and as a field for settlement is remarkable.”
