GUARDING BANK OF ENGLAND

BRITISH PARLIAMENT QUESTIONS. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. United Service. London, July 9. In the House of Commons the lit. Hon. Thomas Shaw (Secretary of State for War) informed Mr. Oliver Baldwin that for 150 years the War Office had supplied a military guard for the Bank of England. As the Government’s hankers and the custodians of the country’s gold reserves, its position was obviously different to that of the other banks. Mr. Shaw said that he was willing to consider a useful suggestion concerning the abolition of the guard. The lit. Hon. Philip Snowden (Chancellor of' the Exchequer), in answer to a question, said he would consider whether it would be in the public interest to permit the Government' to accept land in payment of death duties. Mr. 'Shaw told questioners that the Biitish troops would not carry out manoeuvres in Germany in 1929, and that the Government was not proposing to change the method of tendering for ration beef for the army, In the last half-year 33 per cent, of the beef had been supplied by the Empire.
