ALTERATION OF RECEIPTS

CLERK ADMITS DEFALCATIONS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, July 10. Thomas George Gillespie, aged 49, clerk, was charged to-day that, between July, 1923, and May, 1927, he fraudulently failed to account for sums totalling £414 to the Lands Department. An inspector of the Audit Department gave evidence of his discovering tlie irregularities, and said it was by reason of accused’s forgeries that they were not discovered earlier. To counsel witness said there had been no audit of these particular books for four years until 1928. There were now some changes in the system of booking being made. The changes, however, were being made prior to the discovery. The alterations to the receipts were very clumsily done and would be evident to very casual inspection. Gillespie pleaded guilty and was . committed for sentence.
