CROQUET IN TARANAKI

ASSOCIATION’S ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Taranaki Croquet Association was held in New Plymouth yesterday, Dr. G. Home presiding over a large attendance from all parts of Taranaki. The annual report stated: —The season has been an interesting and enjoyable one. A district tournament was not held this year owing to the fact that the North Island championship tournament was played here, and it was considered that in addition to the various inter-club matches the holding of the two tournaments would prove too strenuous. The play during the North Island championship tournament was of a very high standard, competitors and spectators alike having a most enjoyable time. Mrs. D. K. Morrison, as manager, assisted by a local committee, left no stone unturned to ensure the smooth running of the meeting, with the result that the matches were completed in good time. Following is- tlie result of the respective events: —

North Island Championship. —Mr. Gibbs; runner-up, Mrs. Waters. Ladies’ ' Championship Singles.—Mrs. Waters; runner-up, Mrs. Gambrill. Championship Doubles.— Mesdames Gambrill and Pitcaithly; runners-up, Mesdames Waters and Petrie.

Handicap Singles. —Mrs. Gibbs; run-ner-up, Mrs. Waters. Handicap Doubles. —Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Gibbs; runners-up, Mesdames Stevens and McKay. After keen competition the association inter-club vase was won by the West End Club with the New Plymouth Club runners-up. Mrs. D. K. Morrison, the Taranaki Croquet Association’s delegate to the council, attended, the annual meeting of the New Zealand Croquet Council in Wanganui. At that meeting, on the proposal of Mrs. Morrison, it was decided to ask the council to consider sending a New Zealand team to Australia to compete for the Maeßobertson International Shield. We are pleased to report that this has been given effect to and a team will visit Australia next season. Our best wishes will accompany the team and we hope to see the coveted trophy return with them. The Taranaki Association desires to extend its thanks to all who helped in any way during the past season, especially the Press. The chairman explained that only delegates to the association had voting powers. His ruling was questioned by a member on the grounds that the rule had not been adopted by the council. On nominations being called for the office of president several members, who were not delegates, voted. The chairman insisted that as rules were to be adopted the voting should be carried out a-s if they had been adopted. He stated that clubs having a membership under 20 had one vote, while clubs with a membership of 20 and over had two votes.

Captain Hartnell; I respectfully beg to differ.

The chairman: Only delegates have the power of voting. Captain Hartnell: This is a meeting of the association and not the council. Your ruling would stand if it was a meeting of the council, but not with the association. If you read the rules I think you will have to alter your opinion. # . The chairman stated that if voting powers were given each member then clubs in outlying parts which could only send a delegate to the meeting would be disfranchised. The clubs were then asked to nominate their delegates. Kawaroa stated that it was entitled to two delegates but that only one was present and requested that another member of the club should be substituted for the absent delegate. A member: The rules distinctly state that there shall be no voting by Th*e chairman: We will take the voice of the delegates on the matter. On %he motion being put to the delecrates it was carried unanimously. ° The election of officers resulted: President, Mrs. C. M. Hill; honorary secretary and treasurer, Mrs. D. K. Morrison; vice-presidents, Mrs. V. H. Mrs. F. J. Morris and Captain F. Hartnell; official handicappers, Mesdames C. M Hill, F. J. Morris, D. K. Morrison; delegate to the New Zealand Council, Mts7 D. K. Morrison. It was decided to adopt the yules or the Manawatu Association, with minor amendments. Votes of thanks were accorded the outgoing officers and the retiring president, Dr. G. Home.
