LOOKING AHEAD

FUTURE OF SHOW. ALL PULL TOGETHER. What are its future prospects? To what extent will it develop, and is there any limit to its advancement? These are questions one might well ask with reference to the Stratford Winter Show. That the show has made the tremendous strides it has since its inception is indicative of the readiness with which the town and district have backed it up, and the future expansion and development of the show will depend, to a great extent, upon the support it receives in this direction. But it may be assumed that this support is practically assured as the show so firmly established itself that it commands recognition with similar institutions in any part of the Dominion. This statement is born out by the fact that entries and demands for exhibition space this year have eclipsed the record figures of 1028.

The financial position of the show is sound so that money matters would prove no deterrent under ordinary conditions. Nevertheless funds have a direct bearing upon space and it is here, to use a colloquialism, that the shoe pinches. The question of space has been looming upon the Stratford show horizon for the last two years, and has now swelled to such alarming proportions that a remedy for the limitations of the two garages, spacious as they are, in which the show has been housed since 1927, is an immediate necessity. No other building in Stratford could possibly accommodate the show, so the committee has no alternative but to build a suitable structure.

It is understood that the committee has a site in view but no definite arrangements have been made. Probably the question will be fully gone into after the show when the finances should be swelled by the proceeds from the present function.

But even the space problem should not hinder the progress of the show. Rather should it be an incentive to the committee to tackle the question immediately and, given proper accommodation, there is no reason why in a few years the show should not become the leading institution of its kind in Taranaki.
