PROGRESS OF WESTOWN
MEETING OF ASSOCIATION. PROPOSED TRAM EXTENSION. A meeting, of the Westown Progressive Association was held in the Westown Hall last night, Mr. V. C. Davies presiding over an attendance of twelve. The New Plymouth Borough Council wrote stating that the matter of the Westown tramway extension had been deferred until a report was received from the association. The chairman explained that a deputation had waited on the tramways committee to go into the question of the proposed tramway extension to Upper Westown. The deputation had promised that if the council extended the system to Wallath Road the association would provide £5O for the erection of a sheltershed. Messrs. Duncan and Davies were prepared to dedicate sufficient land for the shed and at the corners the land required for road widening had been offered free of any cost to the council. The whole of one side of the street had already been widened and, if necessary, the other side would be widened too. There was no doubt, Mr. ' Davies said, that the’present system of bus and tram overlapping was proving a great expense to the ratepayers, and if it was decided to extend the tramways the present loss would, on a conservative estimate, be halved. It was decided to place the association’s scheme before the council in writing. Mr. L. O. Taylor was elected a member of the association. - ~ The Taranaki County Council advised that Crs. Connett and Vickers had been deputed to attend to the association’s request that the corner of Eliot Road and Frankley Road should be cut back. It was stated that the ma'tter was receiving attention. It was stated that the council had promised to metal the portion of Eliot Road past the bus terminus. It was decided to draw the Borough Council’s attention to the bad state of the junction of Walsh and Omata Roads and to request the council to include the Omata and Blagdon Roads in its road-widening scheme. In view of the fact that the association considered the corner at the junction of Frankley and Eliot Roads a dangerous one it was decided to request the . County Council to instal a light.
