VARSITY ATHLETES’ TOUR

ENGLISH STORM AMERICA FIELD EVENTS WON IN CANADA. TENNIS VICTORY AT NEW YORK. By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Australian Press Association. Received July 7, 11 p.m. Hamilton (Ontario), July 6. The Oxford-Cambridge track and field athletic team - iened its invasion of this continent with a seven-to-five win of a total twelve points against the Hamilton Olympic Club to-day. Oxford-Cambridge won the 120 yards high hurdles, running broad jump, putting the shot, two-niile run, 220 yards low hurdles, 440 yards, and the running high jump, while Hamilton won the 100 yards, 220 yards, 880 yards, one mile and pole vault. Phil Edwards and Johnny Fitzpatrick, Olympic stars, each won two events for Hamilton. The attendance numbered six thousand. The Oxford-Cambridge team registered its first win in the fourth event, the 120 yards high hurdles, when Mann dashed home a yard ahead of his teammate, Harper, of Oxford, in 15 4-ssec. Mann took command from the start and his beautiful action earned the plaudits of the crowd. The two Hamilton competitors never had a “look in.” Phil Edwards, Canada’s Olympic runner from the West Indies, was the cynosure of all eyes in the half-mile, which he won for Hamilton with delightful ease. Hampson (Oxford), Mason (Cambridge) and Wentworth (Oxford) finished behind him in that order. Wentworth, who aroused some curiosity with his upright start, began well but dropped behind after being pocketed at the first turn. Johnny Fitzpatrick, Canadian Olympic runner, won both the century dash and the 220 yards for Hamilton. Lightwood, of Oxford, ’Varsity’s captain, finished second in the latter event. Humphrey (Oxford) broke the Canadian record of twenty years’ standing in the twd-mile run, which he accomplished in 9min. 33 2-ssec., the previous high mark being 9min. 34 3-ssec. Humphrey finished the last half lap with remarkable speed, bringing the crowd to its feet. Young (Cambridge) dropped out at sft. Gin? in the running high jump. The Oxford-Cambridge tennis team retained the Prince of Wales Cup at Cedarshurst, Long Island, by taking four more matches from the Rockaway team, bringing the score to ten to one, says a New York message. Nearly all the matches were hardfought, despite the overwhelming score. The visitors, in winning four matches to-day, did not drop one set. Youno- experienced some difficulty in defeating Jonklaas, they being closely matched throughout the first set. Both remained at the back of the court and drove accurately, but Young managed to gain the set by steady pounding, which finally found the weak point in his opponent’s defence. Jonklaas showed signs of taking the second set, but faltered after gaining a two-game lead at the start. The New Zealander then resorted to a faster pace and harder stroking enabled him to run off five games to lead 5—2. He finished at a rapid clip to take the set 6—2. Results are: Avory (Oxford-Cam-bridge) defeated Parker 6—4, 6 —4; Dericou (Oxford-Cambridge) defeated McGlinn 7 —5, 6—2; Young defeated Jonklaas B—6, 5 —3; Dericou and Mather defeated Herbert and Foster 6—3, 6—l.
