CURE OF CANCER

WORK IN AUSTRALIA. _ In the light of the experience gained at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney during the past year, when it has been proved that radium is a necessary substance for the treatment of certain forms of cancer, first-class radium departments and clinics are to be established at Sydney and St. Vincent’s Hospitals. Dr. Arthur Burrows, Commonwealth radium adviser, was recently in Sydney to consult with the medical staffs and give courses of ' istruction to supplement those already arranged by the University of Sydney, which was a party to the investigations carried on at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital with £lO,000 worth of radium lent by the mon wealth Government. The Federal Minister of Health, Sir Neville Howse, ys he desires that radium should also be made available to country hospitals, where the necessary medical experience in its use is available, and has granted permission to the university toward that end. To enable these extensions of treatment to be made, the Commonwealth Government will lend to the university a further 1126 milligrammes of radium, which will not, however, be available for several months. It is explained that the original amount made available was 873 milligrammes. Even with the additional quantity the Cancer Research Committee will not be in a position to provide facilities for radium treatment for the whole of New South Walc.s. On its advice the Senate of the University has purchased from the cancer fund subscribed by the public a further 500 milligrammes of radium, which will come into use at the end of the year. After the whole of the radium has been brought into use for the treatment of patients, the Cancer Research Committee will be in a position to consider whether adequate provision of radium has been made for the treatment of cancerous patients in the State.
