RACING AT MELBOURNE

GRAND NATIONAL HURDLES KENTLE FIRST; CHUMREE SECOND STRAIGHT SHOT’S STEEPLECHASE. By Telegiraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Received July 7, 5.5 p.m. Melbourne, July 7. The results of the. V.R.C. Grand National Hurdles, of £2090, three miles, was:— KENTLE, by Kenilwortfh —Amieitia), 10.8 1 CHUMREE, by Comedy King—Mittalia, 9.9 2 BAY OF BISCAY, 9.6 3' Fifteen started. Drizzling rain fell just before the race started and the -weather was extremely cold. Tiki was smartest away, followed 'by Ich Dien, Cobranveil, Chumree, Adit, Kentle and Bay of Biscay. At the second hurdle Baveroy fell and lost his rider and Ich Dien continued to make the pace from Tiki and Cobranveil. The horses were well bunched after a mile, when Adit moved up and gained a lead from Chumree and Ich Dien, while Tiki began to lose ground and subsequently pulled up. Kentle and 01gachipilly came into the picture the second time round. At the back of the course Adit remained in front till approaching the home turn, where Chumree and Kentle were in command with May Day and Bay of Biscay handy Entering the straight Kentle got through on the rails and, although he had difficulty in shaking Chumree off, won by a length and three-quarters, with two lengths between second and third. May Day and the others came well behind. Time, smin 39Jsec. Kentle is owned by Mr. L. •K. . S. MacKinnon, chairman of the Victorian Racing Club, who not long ago paid only 700 guineas for this Brisbane Cup winner. Tiki during the race yesterday slipped a fetlock joint and is in a bad way. The Kensington Steeplechase resulted as follows:— STRAIGHT SHOT, 9.0 1 NAMERA, 10.9 2 CHAUMONT, 11.4 3 Eight started. Won by a length and a-half, with a length, and a-half between second and third. Time, 4min Subsequent to Kentle’s win at. Flemington on June 3, “Clifden,” in the Referee, stated: “It would not be surprising if jumping races on the second day of the V.R.C. Birthday meeting gave a better indication as to the probable results of the Nationals than races on the first day. In the Marlborough Hurdle Race, over 21 miles, Kentle came from fourth at the turn into the straight, to win in good style by five lengths from Cobranveil, with The Indian two lengths away, third. Even allowing for the fact that Kentle was presented with a nice opening on the rails at the turn into the straight 1 , his was a most impressive win, for Webster stopped riding him 50 yards from the post. Adsum came to grief about seven furlongs from home, and brought down Epical. At that stage The Indian and Sayles were in front from ■ Cobranveil, but Cobranveil ran up with the leaders at the turn. He went on the outside, but Kentle waited for a' run on the rails. They went to the front at. the last hurdle but Cobranveil had little chance of holding Kentle. “The winner may be one of the best staying hurdlers this season. He was a natural stayer on the flat, winning the Brisbane Cup, and he promises to be a hard horse to beat in the National. He is owned and trained by S. W. Biggins, who bought him in Melbourne eighteen months ago, when he unsuccessfully visited Melbourne for the Melbourne Cup. Biggins has won four races with Kentle, who has been a profitable purchase. S. Webster displayed great pluck in riding Kentle, as he had a rib broken in a fall last week.” ROSEHILL RACE RESULTS. NEW ZEALAND HORSES PLACED. Received July 7, 5.5 p.m. Sydney, July 7. PREPARATIONS AT TRENTHAM. SOME DISCLOSURES OF FORM. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, July 6, The weather was fine and mild, and the tracks good at Trentham this morning. Practically all work was done on the trial grass, there being little jumping. Royal Game beat Painting over half a mile. Historic and Roi de Vai sprinted smartly. Quantum strode out well for half a mile. Handsome beat Rory Mor easily over six furlongs in Imin. 22sec. Fairy Herald, looking in great order, strode out two rounds on the sand. Gold Cure beat Cerf easily over six furlongs in Imin. 21 2-ssec., the first three beinf covered in 41sec. It was a good gallop. Araemo and Dainty Ways ran five furlongs in Imin. Bsec. Tcheka beat Last Crust over six furlongs in Imin. 22Js§c., the last four being run in 54see. Lady Gay and General Wai did seven furlongs in Imin. 42sec. easily. Town Bank, who is a trifle sore, strode out over two rounds. Tourist just beat Mangaharei on the sand track, running five furlongs in Imin. 3sec. Lady Rene and Otauru Lass did the last four of five furlongs in 53 l-ssec. Juggle and Money Mint were ridden out to beat Marjoram over five furlongs in Imin. 7sec. Maori Boy, looking very well, did solid pace work. Tinokoa, King’s Guard and Takutama were on the course, but were no.t stripped. Inferno jumped three hurdles. Black Mint and Modern, at threequarter pace, went over six furlongs in Imin. 26sec. Shot Silk was sprinted on the sand. Comical (Burt) and Tresham (Trillo) jumped three hurdles perfectly. Afterwards Comical jumped three alone. Tresham and Singleton then galloped seven furlongs in Imin. 36 3-ssec., the last four in 54£sec. Taneriri beat Apache over six furlongs in Imin. 25sec. Fabriano, looking light and a trifle sore, did pace work only. Lucky Hit beat Mandarine at the end of four furlongs in 53sec. Elysianor jumped three hurdles very well and worked solidly on the flat. He looks a good horse. Prince Lu jumped three hurdles well and then strode out over a mile. He looks to be in great order. Glendowie (Stanway) and Waitaunalia (Conway) jumped five' fences on the course proper. Glendowie gave a great display of jumping and both galloped solidly on the flat afterwards. NEW PLYMOUTH TRACK WORK. (By “Moturoa.”) Beyond being a little “dead” after the recent rains, the New Plymouth tracks were in good order for work yesterday morning, and the' course proper was open for work with the flags out about 30 feet. ### * > Most of the inhabitants of the ‘New Plymouth stables were restricted to light tasks, but a sprint between the juveniles Kilmanu and Orapai and Te Atiawa was as interesting as the windup gallops of the Wellington candidates. *## - # Oration and Valkon will be E. George’s team to go down on the express this morning, and Horomea, Anolo and Black Odin will probably accompany them. * # * # Quillfire, who looks in great fettle for the Taranaki Hunt Club meeting, was restricted to steady three-quarter pace work. He has come on well under the hands of Dan Moraghan and is expected to play a prominent part among the hunters and hack hurdlers next month. ##* « - The Swell and Ridgeniount, who have both wintered well, made their first appearance on the track for some time and stripped in great condition. Ridgemount appears to have filled out more in front and should prove a good winner in the coming season. Both were given light tasks. s # # *

Karangawai worked strongly over two rounds on the plough, and has fined down a lot lately. He is yet a young horse and looks a good ’chasing proposition for next season. >){■’ *K’

Royal Mint, who is still tender, and Peggy Black, a promising protege of P. Johnson’s, did half pace work.

Anolo, Horomea and Black Odin were companions over a mile at a little better than three-quarter pace work. Anolo looks none the worse-for his racing at Waverley, and Horomea appeared very bright. She may go well in the hack hurdles on Wednesday.

The best gallop of the morning was registered by the two-year-old Kilmanu (Kilbroney —Panama), owned by Mr. “Addie” Lile, who had the Thespian yearling Arapai and Te Atiawa from Jimmy O’Neill’s menage as companions. The! trio moved off from the two furlong post on the course proper. Te Atiawa was slow to get away, and as they came in to the straight Kilmanu w T as clear of Orapai and Te Atiawa. The latter made a forward move at the distance but could make no impression on the youngster, who ran in by three lengths from Te Atiawa, with Orapai a length further back. The time, 274 sec., was good on the outside of the course' proper, which was holding. Kilmanu, who will not be required to race until Christmas, moved very sweetly, and it would not occasion any surprise to see the rising three-year-old win a good race next season.

Whenuanui (R. Eager) jumped four fences at a solid pace. He took the obstacles in promising style and should prove a good addition to the ranks of hack hurdlers.

Gold Dawn, Singer and Huirangi Girl were given light tasks on the plough. The latter appears to be in great heart, and her winning way is not done yet. She' has recovered from her musclesoreness.

After a couple of circuits of half pace work, Valkon and Oration were taken out on the course proper and galloped down from the winning post the reverse way. There was not much pace on down the straight, but the six furlongs was covered in imin. 22sec. —a nice working gallop. Both are looking well and Oration is expected to pick up some stake money on the trip.
