POHUTUKAWA BLOOM IN JUNE
VAGARIES OF MONTH’S WEATHER.
With the exception of. general rains between June 7 and 11 the weather during last month was mainly fine and unusually mild to the 19th. After that squally and boisterous weather was general and the May deficiency of rain was made up. Only a few places in Taranaki, Hawke’s Bay and North Auckland had less rain than the average.
There were few severe frosts and the heavy rains maintained a good growth of vegetation. Fodder was still abundant.
The report mentions the unusual growth of flowers and. shoots. At Wellington blossoms appeared on the pohutukawas.
During the last week of the month strong winds were experienced, amounting to gales, in the North Island. The period was remarkable for the number of tornadoes that occuri’ed. The most severe was at Palmerston North. Many places recorded severe thupder and hail. A number of stock was killed and several persons received shocks, two being rendered unconscious.
