PROGRESS OF MANGOREI

PROPOSED SUPIPLY OF POWER. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Once again the Mangorei branch of the Farmers’ Union is rendering service to the community interests by this time advocating, on behalf of settlers on the Upper Mangorei Road, electric light and power supply from the New Plymouth Borough Council. A meeting was held in the Mangorei Hall on Saturday evening when outlines of the electric scheme, obtained through the ready and obliging electrical engineer (Mr. H. Huggett) were put before settlers by the president, Mr. Benoni White, ■who presided.

Attendance was somewhat restricted through prevalence of much sickness in the district. The number present was not sufficient to make up the necessary guarantee. Details were well discussed, yet, despite the lucid and definite statement supplied, the technical nature of the undertaking obviously needed some expert elucidation, and the conditional promise of a personal attendance at a future meeting by the electrical engineer will he welcomed by settlers

A resolution to that effect was passed, with a recommendation that a departmental official house to house call he made throughout the section of road concerned to obtain the required number of guarantors. The president will personally attend to this recommendation, and suggests that the engineer prepare a further statement, more from the layman’s outlook of ways and means affected by the respective plants of the electric department (approximately £2800), that of the guarantor, and the consumption responsibility; a copy of such to be forwarded to each settler with advice as to what early date may be chosen for an official canvassed to follow up. Meanwhile the project is under active social consideration.

Owing to the protracted time taken by these matters, only routine Farmers’ Union work was put through, small accounts being passed for payment, with a revised resolution that the vice-president (Mr. Reid) instead of Mr. Stanton (who retires from official work) co-operate with the president in operating the branch’s Post Office Savings Bank account Telephone communication is now interspersed throughout the road, and provision made for postal rural delivery service, which is unfortunately, to the disappointment and detriment of the greater number, being held up by a few not complying with postal conditions and regulations. Surely distance is comparatively disappearing, and remoteness of location and communication .will soon be nonexistent, thanks to the results of scientific research and the caterings for social welfare. The question looms somewhat prominently, are we, by proper use of privileges and benefits, fully profiting thereby?
