THE COW TREE.

Have you ever heard of a cow tree? It sounds ver— funny, doeen’t it? but there is one, although it’s in a far-away country. There is a barren stretch of rocks in one part of South America where scarceW a plant seems to grow, yet one tall tree -flourishes there, and its roots seem to take quite a firm hold on the rock. The leaves are the colour of leather. This tree is called the cow tree, and do you know why? Because the Indians chop into the side of the trunk, and make a liquid pour out of the tree which looks just like milk. They catch it in bowls; and they use it as milk, too. As a matter of fact, it is very useful to the natives, for there are no cattle within miles of the place because of the barren rock
